Description

Centranthus ruber 'Coccineus', or red valerian, is a beautiful clump-forming perennial with remarkable red flowers. It has an exceptional flowering period, even more so if you prune the dry stems. It spreads and requires little care.

It easily self-seeds, and sometimes settles in curious places like a crack in a wall. It prefers dryness and sunlight. If you don't want it to spread, simply cut the faded flowers before they form seeds.

For a pretty display, plant it alongside its cousin, the white valerian.

Planting and care

Plant in full sun or possibly in partial shade in neutral to limestone, even rocky, soil. Valerians prefer well-drained, even poor, soil. They withstand drought well. You can prune the inflorescences after flowering to encourage a second bloom and prevent self-seeding.
