Cerastium biebersteinii, commonly known as silver basket, is a sought-after perennial ground cover plant prized for its small silver-grey leaves and its abundant white tiny flowers. Ideal for rockeries or borders, it is commonly used in gardens for its role as a ground cover. This resilient and easy-to-grow variety thrives well in cold and dry climates. Its bright flowering attracts attention, especially when combined with other perennial plants. In flower beds, the silver basket also forms an ideal companion plant for all its companions.
Belonging to the Caryophyllaceae family, Cerastium biebersteinii is native to Crimea. It is a perennial herbaceous plant that spreads in dense 15 to 25 cm high carpets. Its small leaves are covered with silky hairs giving them a soft texture and a silver-grey colour. The star-shaped white flowers, measuring between 1.5 and 2 cm in diameter, appear in spring, usually from April to June, clustered on terminal cymes. The plant can quickly cover an area, spreading in width while remaining low. Its leaves are evergreen in mild climates and deciduous in regions with cold winters.
Cerastium biebersteinii is ideal as a ground cover in rockeries and border plantings. It can also be used to fill the space between shrubs in large beds, creating an attractive contrast with plants with darker foliage or bright blooms. For successful combinations, choose plants such as Sedum spectabile 'Carl', Nepeta faassenii (catmint), Stachys byzantina (lamb's ear) and Erysimum 'Bowles Mauve' (wallflower). Together, these plants offer a palette of harmonious textures and colours while requiring little maintenance in dry or low-water gardens.

Botanical data
Cerastium biebersteinii seeds are best sown in spring or autumn. For direct sowing outdoors, prepare the soil by loosening it well and removing weeds. Sow the seeds on the surface or lightly buried (about 3 mm deep), then lightly press down. It is recommended to space the young plants 15 to 20 cm apart to allow them to spread. If you choose indoor sowing, do it 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost using a light soil. Maintain a temperature of 18 to 24°C to promote germination, which generally takes 1 to 2 weeks.
Cultivation:
Snow-in-summer is easily grown in well-drained soils and prefers a sunny exposure, although it tolerates light shade. This plant adapts to a wide range of soils but thrives particularly well in poor to slightly alkaline soils (pH 6.0 to 7.0). Highly resistant to drought and cold (down to -25°C), it requires little watering once established. To maintain good vigour, divide the clumps every 2 to 3 years in spring or autumn. After flowering, prune the plant to encourage new growth and prevent it from becoming too invasive.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
