Description

Actaea simplex Chocoholic is a more compact and dense variety than the species. It displays a large and beautifully dissected foliage, initially dark green, turning chocolate and finally black as the season progresses. From August to October it blooms in large, slightly arched spikes, 10 to 20 cm (4 to 8in) long, composed of small star-shaped pinkish-white flowers measuring 2 cm (1in). The flowers emit a silky vanilla fragrance that is known to repel insects. They are borne on purple stems. A deciduous plant with a majestic habit, it thrives in partial shade and moist soil.

Actaea or Cimicifuga, also known as Bugbane, belongs to the buttercup family. Native to northeastern Russia, Mongolia, and Japan, it is a very hardy plant. Actaea Chocoholic is a horticultural selection with a bushy and compact habit. Its deciduous foliage is ample and highly attractive. It consists of leaves that are 30 to 60 cm (12 to 24in) long, predominantly chocolate in colour which varies from dark green to almost black throughout the season, depending on the exposure. The leaves are lighter in the shade and darker in the sun, toothed and dissected. At maturity, this Actaea can reach a height of 90 cm (35in) and a spread of 50 to 60 cm (20 to 24in). In late August, tall floral stems rise, topped by an inflorescence of long white spikes with pink highlights, emitting a delightful scent that is appreciated by butterflies. After this sublime flowering, brown fruits on red stems adorn the plant until the end of winter. The above-ground vegetation dries up in autumn.

Actaea simplex Chocoholic can be planted as a border or in a mass planting or in woodland areas. It is an excellent plant for shaded locations. You can also grow it in a pot and use its flowers for bouquets. Pair it with other perennials such as Hostas, Ferns, Corydalis, or Astilbes.

Planting and care

Actaeas thrive in cool, semi-shady conditions. Prune the dry foliage in early winter and use discreet staking. It is a trouble-free, easy-to-maintain plant that does not like the drought associated with full sun.
