Description

'Limerock Ruby' Coreopsis, also known as Pink Coreopsis, is a beautiful new addition. It is a bushy perennial with a compact habit, covered in intense and deep ruby red flowers, with a red centre that is highlighted by a small golden centre. It blooms tirelessly in the summer and autumn, with dark green and airy foliage. Its compact habit, distinct silhouette, undemanding nature, and love for the sun make it ideal for well-exposed borders. It is also remarkable as a potted perennial and an excellent cut flower.

The Pink Coreopsis belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is native to the prairies of Central America and North America, ranging from Georgia and South Carolina to Nova Scotia, passing through New Jersey. It is familiar with sandy and loamy soils found along rivers and coastal areas. 'Limerock Ruby' is a cultivar that stands out for its more intense colour of its flower heads and its compact habit. This rhizomatous perennial, reaching 40 cm (16in) in all directions, has a slightly prostrate bushy habit. It blooms from late June to October in successive waves. The intense red flower heads, measuring 3 cm (1in) in diameter, have a ruby centre surrounded by a dark yellow centre. They are carried at the end of short upright stems. This plant develops opposite, lanceolate, finely divided leaves that are 4 to 7 cm (2 to 3in) long and dark green in colour, giving it an airy appearance. It slowly spreads through its non-running rhizomes, eventually forming a beautiful ground cover.

The 'Limerock Ruby' Coreopsis is a perennial with multiple uses. Unlike other species like the Threadleaf Coreopsis, it thrives in cooler climates and prefers soils that retain moisture. Plant it in a rock garden, on a rustic slope with wallflowers, love-in-a-mist, and wild flax, or in an herbaceous border alongside Teucrium chamaedrys or x lucidrys, cosmos, and annual cornflowers. In pots or containers, this plant blooms continuously from the first year. For a beautiful summer display, it can be paired with Calamintha glandulosa and Nepeta 'Dawn to dusk' whether in the ground or in a large pot, requiring little water. It is also a lovely flower for summer bouquets.

Planting and care

The pink coreopsis is a flower that grows best in well-drained soil with good moisture retention under full sun. Coreopsis rosea 'Limerock Ruby' is a less fussy variety that can thrive in different soil types. The flowers bloom for a long time in light, porous, gravelly or sandy soil that is slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, even if it is poor in nutrients. They can also grow well in soil rich in humus if the drainage is good. It is best to remove faded flowers by the end of August to encourage autumn regrowth. Pruning in late September will promote the growth of new basal shoots.
