The Coreopsis 'Tequila Sunrise' is a variety that stands out with variegated yellow and cream foliage, a rare characteristic among these plants. Its vibrant growth perfectly complements the red-touched yellow flowering. In bloom throughout the summer, with a compact habit, this variety is ideal in the foreground of borders and flower beds. Radiant and easy to grow even in containers, this perennial only requires sun and light soil to thrive.
The Coreopsis grandiflora belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is native to North America, from California all the way to the Great Lakes, including New Mexico (all states to the east). 'Tequila Sunrise' is a horticultural hybrid that inherits the genes of this plant. A sun-loving perennial, it is remarkable for both its flowers and foliage. The plant blooms continuously from May to August. Its sturdy flower stems, reaching 45 cm (18in) in height, bear bright yellow flower heads, spotted with mahogany red towards a central yellow disc. Its lanceolate leaves (shaped like a lance) are green, variegated with pink in spring and then yellow and cream in summer. The above-ground vegetation is deciduous and absent in winter.
The Coreopsis Tequila Sunrise thrives in full sun, well-drained light, porous, gravelly, or sandy soils, which are not overly dry in summer. This particularly vibrant variety can be planted alongside plants with dark foliage to create an interesting contrast. Pair it with the Midnight Reiter perennial geranium or the Lychnis Vesuvius. Its combination with marigolds is flamboyant, while a basket of silver foliage brings a touch of calmness to the overall display. In a country-style flower bed or on a patio, the vibrant flowering of coreopsis is beautiful with the blue or purple spikes of perennial salvias.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
