Description

The Delosperma Royal Ranger 'Yellow' is a hybrid delosperma with small flowers that are a bright pearly lemon yellow with a white halo and a yellow heart. Its flowering is early and very abundant. Its flowers are slightly smaller than other varieties, but they bloom from May to October. The plant has a well-rounded cushion habit formed by small succulent and evergreen leaves, even in dry and poor soil.

The Delosperma belong to the family of Aizoaceae. Cousins of mesembryanthemum, they are perennials native to South Africa, East Africa, and Madagascar, which are well-suited to hot and dry climates. They can be planted between rocks, on pavement slabs, or on a dry slope, as long as they find some substrate. The Royal Ranger series comes from the Delosperma congestum, hardy to about -12°C (10.4°F) in well-drained soil. If your region experiences freezing temperatures of this kind or worse, place it in a pot or container that you can bring indoors during winter.

The Royal Ranger 'Yellow' Ice Plant comes from a series of hybrid plants offering both early and long-lasting flowering, with vibrant colours. It has creeping, branching, stems that easily root, thus colonising an area up to 1m (3ft) wide under favourable conditions. They bear small, fleshy, light green leaves that are cylindrical. These leaves are sessile, very succulent, warty, and measure about 3cm (1in). It forms a small clump 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) high that is covered with beautiful flowers grouped in cymes. Each flower has a corolla of fine ligules in lemon yellow, painted with a small white halo surrounding a yellow eye. The flowering period extends over a long time and brings vibrant colours to neglected areas.

The Delosperma Royal Ranger 'Yellow' thrives in a very sunny exposure, above walls, in rock gardens, or in pots on the terrace or balcony. This small cascading plant can be brought indoors during winter if necessary. It is a quintessential rock garden plant. It thrives alongside Sedums, Dianthus, Osteospermum, and Wall Bellflowers. Otherwise, plant it as a evergreen ground cover with plants with similar needs, such as Stachys or Valerian. Containers composed of different varieties from the Royal Ranger series allow you to create a dense, colorful foliage carpet for long months without much maintenance.

Planting and care

The Delosperma settles in place in spring or autumn in well-drained, dry, even rocky soil. It appreciates walls, rockeries, and well-exposed slopes. If your region experiences frosts below -10°C (14°F), choose a place in a pot or planter. This way, you can shelter it during winter if necessary.

A sunny and warm location is essential for it to feel comfortable and bloom abundantly. Some watering during prolonged dry spells will be welcome. You can remove faded flowers to encourage new ones. Division of the stump may be necessary after a few years, depending on its location.

Make sure it doesn't become covered in dead leaves from nearby trees to avoid risk of rotting. Likewise, it doesn't appreciate having its feet in stagnant water.
