Delphinium belladonna 'Cliveden Beauty' is a variety of perennial larkspur renowned for its magnificent sky-blue flowers. More robust and easier to grow than other delphiniums, this selection is particularly appreciated in cottage-style gardens or for cut flowers. The plant also stands out for its ability to bloom multiple times during the summer and its good resistance to the wind. This larkspur blooms from the first year. Use it to create beautiful bouquets!
A hybrid of Delphinium elatum and D. grandiflorum, the 'Cliveden Beauty' variety was bred in the 1930s. This perennial plant reaches a moderate height, about 70 cm, and its flexible stems are less susceptible to wind. It develops branched stems on which light clusters of sky-blue flowers with turquoise highlights and a white throat flourish. The flowers, approximately 4 cm in diameter, appear at least twice a year, in June-July and then in September-October, provided that faded flowers are removed. Its green foliage is beautifully palmate and cut and forms a beautiful ensemble with the delicacy of the inflorescences. The airy vegetation is deciduous, drying up in autumn and re-emerging in spring. The rootstock can withstand temperatures down to -34°C. This plant grows from a woody rhizome that plunges vertically into the soil, which should be flexible and deep enough to accommodate it.
Delphiniums prefer moist and rich soils, but they dislike having their roots in heavy, waterlogged soil. They do not mind harsh winters and thrive in full sun. If you provide them with good conditions, they will prove very loyal in the garden. The 'Cliveden Beauty' larkspur can lean on other plants in a border, especially grasses like pennisetum, lupins or polychrome euphorbias. It is a delicate-looking delphinium that pairs perfectly with clustered bush roses or tree peonies.
Belladonna hybrid delphiniums allow you to fully appreciate these flowers and will come up in the same place for several years, without the need to distribute slug deterrents every day.

Sow the seeds of Delphinium 'Cliveden Beauty' directly outdoors from April to May, in full sun, in a fertile, light, well-drained soil that has been well loosened beforehand. Bury the fine seeds to a depth of 6 mm in small holes spaced 30 cm apart. Keep the soil moist by watering regularly, especially during dry periods. Germination generally takes 14 to 21 days. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out by planting only one young plant every 15 cm.
For earlier flowering, sow Delphinium seeds from August to October in 7.5 cm pots in a good quality soil kept moist. Place the pots in a propagator or inside a plastic bag at a temperature of 15-20°C until germination. Once the seedlings have developed, place them in a bright, but cooler location. Overwinter the plants in a cool, bright place, protected from frost, watering them sparingly. Transplant them to their final location in the following spring. Water regularly until the plants are fully established.
Remove faded flowers to encourage renewed flowering. Delphiniums thrive in sunny locations, sheltered from the wind, as well as in fertile soil, rich in organic matter and well-drained. Soil that is too wet or too dry is detrimental to the growth and flowering duration of the larkspur.
Delphinium belladonna 'Cliveden Beauty' can be planted in spring and autumn in the ground or in a container. Make sure the container is large enough to accommodate it (50 cm x 50 cm) and keep it away from strong winds in this case. Delphiniums are easy to grow but do have some essential requirements: they dislike heavy and wet soils, as well as dry and poor soils. The soil that suits them best is good black soil, rich in humus, non-compact, moist, even in summer, but not waterlogged in winter. They also enjoy being in the sun.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
