This carefully planted young plant has not taken root, I find it quite unfortunate considering the price!

Description

Delphinium 'Finsteraarhorn' is an extraordinary horticultural selection derived from an alpine botanical species that proves to be an exceptional perennial. It offers powerful spikes reaching a minimum of 1.70 m (6ft) from June to September, covered with invincible, deep gentian blue flowers, with a dark heart adorned with a brown and dark bee. Majestic in the background of a group, it can do without staking in sheltered situations. This plant thrives in sunny, rich, deep, and permeable soils.

Delphinium 'Finsteraarhorn' bears an improbable name, which refers to a beautiful Swiss mountain near Mont Blanc. Belonging to the ranunculus family, it comes from Delphinium elatum, the tall larkspur, which can be found in moist meadows at high altitudes in the Eastern Pyrenees and throughout the European Alps, as well as Southern, Central and Eastern Europe, Siberia, Mongolia, and China. This plant has given rise, among others, to the famous "Pacific Giant" series.

'Finsteraarhorn' is a majestic herbaceous perennial plant with a short life but rapid growth. It forms a clump of deeply cut palmate, tender green leaves from which floral stems measuring 1.70 m (6ft) to 2 m (7ft) in height emerge in summer. The flowering begins in June and then resumes in September, provided that the faded stems are removed. It is very popular with pollinating insects. The flowers are single, cup-shaped, gathered on large dense and sturdy spikes, and display intense and deep gentian blue petals, surrounding a central collar of dark brown petals called a 'bee'. The plant develops from a woody rootstock that sinks vertically into the soil.

The characteristic silhouette of Delphiniums adds grandeur, height, and charm to perennial beds. They also make good companions for moss or Gallic roses, creating charming and romantic scenes. Another beautiful combination can be made with soft orange daylilies and the baby's breath 'Rosenschleier'. This tall variety can be supported by flowering bushes such as lilacs, hibiscus, or mock oranges, in the background of a bed. Its flowers hold up well in bouquets.

Note: From March to September, the stems of our delphiniums are pruned short to allow better branching of the crown and achieve optimal rooting. This also prevents the stems from breaking during transportation.

Planting and care

Delphiniums are not difficult to grow but dislike heavy and wet or dry and poor soils. The soil that suits them is fertile, rich in humus, low in limestone, non-compact, moist, even in summer, but not excessively wet in winter, and sheltered from strong winds. Under these conditions, they will live for many years. Beware of slugs and snails that can cause damage at the beginning of growth.
