Description

The Larkspur or Delphinium 'Pacific Blue Bird' is a perennial variety that offers magnificent 1-meter (3 feet) inflorescences, gathering semi-double flowers in a very bright medium blue colour, illuminated by a white heart. Imperial and spectacular at the back of a border, this plant requires staking. Delphiniums thrive in sunny, rich, deep, and permeable soils.

The 'Pacific Blue Bird' Delphinium is one of the many hybrids x cultorum obtained through the cross-breeding of D. elatum, which gave birth to the famous 'Pacific Giant' series. It is a tall herbaceous perennial plant with a short lifespan, but rapid growth. It forms a clump of highly divided palmate foliage, tender green, from which emerge 1m (3ft) tall flower spikes on numerous stems reaching a height of 1.8m (6ft). The main flowering occurs in June and continues until September if the stems are cut back as they fade. It is highly attractive to pollinators. The semi-double flowers, with a diameter of 5cm (2in), are gathered in tall and sturdy spikes. They display deep and pure azure blue or lapis lazuli blue petals, surrounding a pretty collar, called 'fly' or 'bee', in white colour. The plant develops from a woody rhizome that vertically penetrates the soil.

The characteristic silhouette of Delphiniums always adds volume, verticality, and a lot of charm to perennial flower beds. They make good companions for moss or Gallic roses, with which they create charming and romantic scenes. You can also create another beautiful association with pink daylilies, mauve or blue panicle phlox, and baby's breath 'Rosenschleier'. This variety should be carefully staked or supported by tall perennials or flowering bushes. Its flowers hold well and are particularly appreciated in bouquets.

Note: From March to September, the stems of our delphiniums are pruned short to allow better branching of the stump and to achieve optimal rooting. This pruning also prevents the stems from breaking during transportation.

Planting and care

Plant them in spring after the last frost. Plant in a sunny location, in cool, rich, and well-drained soil. Leave at least two or three shoots on young plants and five to seven on well-established delphiniums. During growth, water once or twice a week and apply liquid fertilizer every two or three weeks. Remove faded flowers by cutting the spikes at the level of the small side flower shoots. Cut back the entire plant to ground level in autumn. You can dare to go tall with these giant plants that offer structure and balance volumes in the garden. The tallest plants, when isolated, will add volume and lightness against a dark backdrop of hedges or conifers. Those of intermediate size will dress up tall flower beds, such as those with giant dahlias. Take care to maintain the vegetation with regular watering. Watch out for slugs.
