Description

Less spectacular, shorter, but also easier to grow, Dephinium 'Piccolo' (Belladonna Group) offers long, slightly loose spikes, with a light appearance, filled with single or occasionally semi-double flowers, of an intense and remarkable bright blue. Of modest size and well spaced on the spike, they tirelessly renew themselves from June to September-October. Easy to succeed in cool and humus-bearing soil, with its head in the sun, this perennial larkspur is also more resistant to diseases and pests.

Delphinium 'Piccolo' is a plant of the Ranunculaceae family belonging to a group of perennial varieties obtained by cross-breeding Delphinium elatum and Delphinium grandiflorum. 'Piccolo' is distinguished by a more sturdy habit, and a height of less than 80-90cm (32-35in), allowing it to do without staking when sheltered from the wind. Floral stems emerge from a clump of large palmate and finely divided leaves, from May-June to September-October, depending on the climate. This variety produces sparsely branched spikes, 30cm (12in) long, adorned with flowers 3 to 4cm (1 to 2in) in diameter, usually single, graceful and light. They are of an extraordinary blue, close to gentian blue. The plant develops from a woody rootstock that sinks vertically into the soil.

Delphiniums are very floriferous perennial herbaceous plants that are always highly noticeable in a garden. Belladonna hybrid Delphiniums allow you to appreciate these plants in a different way, with the joy of finding them faithfully where you expect them, for several years. Their characteristic silhouette always gives volume, verticality and a lot of charm to perennial plant beds, with an added lightness. They are also good companions for moss or gallica roses, with which they form charming and romantic scenes. You can also create another beautiful combination with soft orange daylilies and Baby's Breath 'Rosenschleier'. The 'Piccolo' variety is well suited for creating flowering pots. Its flowers hold up well in bouquets.

Note: From March to September, the stems of our Delphiniums are pruned short to promote better branching from the stump and achieve optimal rooting. This pruning also prevents the stems from breaking during transportation.

Planting and care

Without being very difficult, the cultivation of Delphiniums still requires some precautions: these plants dislike heavy and humid soils, as well as dry and poor soils. The soil that suits them is a good black soil, rich in humus, non-compact, fresh, even in summer, but not excessively in winter, and sheltered from strong winds. Under these conditions, they will live for many years. Also beware of slugs, which can cause damage at the beginning of vegetation.
