Description

This is a Collection of perennial double Dianthus from the excellent Sunflor series. Three different coloured varieties selected for their very long, colourful and fragrant flowering, with 4 cm diameter flowers. These perennial plants and easy to maintain and flower from April to September, they can be grown in the ground or in pots. These dianthus develop into robust cushions, they tolerate dry, even rocky soils, but are a bit sensitive to cold: they perish below -10°C.

The collection consists of:

x 1 Dianthus Sunflor 'Beetle': flowers in dark violet colour

x 1 Dianthus Sunflor 'Evert': flowers ranging from bright pink to soft pink

x 1 Dianthus Sunflor 'Sinclair': flowers with variegated petals of magenta and pink

Plant these hybrid carnations in spring, in the sun, in well-drained, even slightly chalky soil. They are quite drought-resistant in the ground but they will need regular watering and good horticultural soil if grown in pots. Mix them in your flower borders, rockeries or planters. Keep a spacing of 20 cm between each plant so that they can express its full potential.

The Sunflor hybrids go wonderfully well with other varieties of Dianthus pinks, Helianthemums, Silene schafta Splendens, and Arabis. To recreate the atmosphere of old gardens, you can create a border of these adorable carnations around clumps of peonies and old roses. A harmonious association can be created by combining the Sunflor Dianthus with Lavender Munstead, Scabiosa Pincushion Pink, Dwarf Gaillardia, and Coreopsis grandiflora Sunray. You can also combine them with annual plants such as petunias or lobelias.

Planting and care

Plant Dianthus Sunflor in spring, in loose, humus-bearing soil, even slightly chalky, dry to moist and especially well-drained. In open ground, soil rich in gravel gives good results. Under these conditions, it will be quite hardy, to -10°C. It prefers a very sunny exposure.

In pots, use good quality horticultural compost and water the plants regularly. A fertiliser for geraniums and flowering plants will be useful to support flowering throughout the season.

Lightly prune the clump after flowering to promote foliage renewal and a dense habit, especially if your dianthus is planted in rich soil. In poor soil, it will be a good idea to apply a balanced fertiliser in March.
