Dianthus 'Megan' is an exceptional variety of perennial double carnation, with a compact and well-structured form, making it a perfect choice for creating high-quality floral compositions. Belonging to the Sunflor range, this selection is characterized by its early flowering and profusion of delicately scented flowers from April to September. Whether planted in the ground or in a pot, this evergreen perennial plant is easy to maintain and resistant to temperatures down to -10°C (14°F). Its vibrant and vigorous, bi-coloured flowers in pink and red, flower continuously throughout the season. 'Megan' develops into a robust cushion that withstands dry and rocky soils and loves full sun.
Dianthus Megan belongs to the Caryophyllaceae family, which includes soapwort, sagina, and baby's breath. It is one of many varieties resulting from cross-breeding between Dianthus plumarius and Dianthus caryophyllus. Dianthus plumarius is a European perennial plant, the main ancestor of various varieties of old and new sweet williams. Dianthus caryophyllus, of Mediterranean origin, has passed on its wonderful clove fragrance and tolerance to chalky, dry soils. Megan grows rapidly, reaching a maximum height and spread of 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8in). It forms a dense clump, producing wide, round, double flowers 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) in diameter, carried by short and often branched stems, from April to October. Its linear, evergreen, and leathery leaves are a beautiful blue-grey, pointed and smooth.
The Sunflor® collection of Dianthus is extremely versatile with unique performances. It offers a wide diversity of colours, flower shapes, and plant types. All varieties in this selection flower continuously from spring to autumn, withstand temperatures down to -10°C (14°F), and have compact growth. The plants can be used both outdoors and indoors. The fragrant and colourful flowers are long-lasting in small bouquets or as a buttonhole.
Dianthus Megan is ideal for terraces, balconies, borders, slopes, and rockeries. It is undemanding in terms of water but needs plenty of sunlight. Its superb scented flowers add undeniable charm, even to the most modest settings. The different varieties of Sunflor, such as Sinclair, Megan, Evert, Cosmos, or Beetle, provide a joyful atmosphere and will brighten up your garden with their vivid colours. To create small flowering cushions, combine with other varieties of sweet william (Dianthus plumarius), rock roses, Silene schafta Splendens, Arabis, wall bellflowers, moss phlox (Phlox subulata), aubrietas, Erigeron karvinskianus, soapwort (Saponaria ocymoides), or bloody cranesbill geraniums (Géranium sanguineum). To recreate an old fashioned atmosphere, create a border of these adorable carnations alongside peonies and old roses. A harmonious association can be created by combining the Sunflor® Dianthus with Lavender Munstead, Pincushion Pink scabiosa, Lutin naine gaillardia, and Sunray grandiflora coreopsis, to give an elegant and harmonious contrast. To create a vibrant and colourful garden, you can combine them with annual plants such as petunias, lobelias, and garden verbenas (Verbena Endurascape), offering a dazzling array of vibrant hues. Cosmos and osteospermums are also wise choices to extend the flowering period and add an attractive floral touch.
Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible, in pots, containers, or directly in flower beds.

Botanical data
Plant Dianthus Megan in the spring, in ordinary, permeable and humus-bearing, rocky, even clayey or limestone, dry to moist and especially well-drained soil. A soil rich in gravel yields good results. In open ground, this plant is quite hardy to -10°C (14°F). It prefers a very sunny exposure.
Trim the clump slightly after flowering to promote new foliage and a dense habit, especially if your plant is in rich soil. In poor soil, apply a balanced fertiliser in March.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
