Description

Digitalis purpurea Snow Thimble, also known as the foxglove 'Snow Thimble', is the first variety with entirely white tubular flowers, without visible spots in the throat. This elegant biennial develops thin and slender spikes, covered with immaculate bell-shaped flowers, above a rosette of modest-sized leaves. While its enchanting flowering is a delight to the eyes in a group planting, its more slender habit allows it to stand out in a large pot on the patio or in spectacular bouquets. Fresh and refined, it pairs well with all other plants, is easy to cultivate, and readily self-seeds in the garden.

Foxglove Snow Thimble is a cultivar derived from Digitalis purpurea, a plant from the Plantaginaceae family.  It is a biennial to perennial plant, developing from spring onwards a rosette of modest size, around 30 cm (12in) in diameter, with pubescent, dark green, dentate-crenate leaves, the underside of which is networked and sometimes covered with light woolly hairs. In the second year, in May-June, up to 5 hollow but sturdy stems emerge from the rosette to carry a slender but dense floral spike up to 1 m (3ft) tall, composed of a multitude of tightly packed tubular flowers. Each flower is a pure white bell. The flowering is melliferous and nectariferous. This variety faithfully self-seeds without difficulty, without becoming invasive.

Plant Foxglove Snow Thimble in full sun or partial shade, in humus-rich and moist soil, in the company of old-fashioned roses or perennial plants with single flowers such as columbines, centaureas, astrantias, or thalictrums. This elegant variety, with a not-too-tall but slender habit, will allow you to enjoy its flowering for a long time in a large pot on the patio. This magnificent plant, as architectural as an acanthus, can also accompany perennial geraniums, heucheras, and the feathery foliage of ferns in clear woodland areas. Take advantage of this flower in the house as well by creating sumptuous bouquets.

Planting and care

Purple foxgloves and their varieties prefer partial shade and a neutral to slightly acidic soil, which is deep, humus-rich but not too rich and not too dry or calcareous. These plants are not afraid of the root competition from old trees or perennials. They are sturdy and very hardy plants, but their lifespan is quite short. They self-seed abundantly in the garden. Some species self-seed a lot. If you don't want to be invaded, cut the flower stalks just after flowering.
