Having spent almost 1 week in transit during the spring lockdown, the state of the young plant was a bit worrying upon arrival... but it recovered well in the soil, gave me some beautiful pendulous straw-yellow flowers until late this autumn, and based on my previous experience with echinacea, the plant should grow nicely next spring!

Description

Echinacea 'Aloha' is a new variety with very bright straw yellow flowers and a prominent brown-orange centre, a wonder for meadow gardens.

Originally from the United States, this perennial forms a dense, hardy clump. The deciduous leaves, lanceolate and green, are bristly with rough hairs. The reddish, ramified stems are topped with a solitary 8cm (3in) diameter inflorescence, with a prominent, bristly, orangish-brown disc, and bright straw yellow ligules.

The 'Aloha' Purple Coneflower, melliferous, thrives in fertile, deep, loose, moist and well-drained soil in a sunny location. Mulch the base in May to retain moisture in summer, as it is sensitive to lack of water. Excellent flowers for cutting or drying.

The 'Aloha' Purple Coneflower is used in mixed borders with other varieties or in the company of lupins, Amaranths, and Astilbes.

Properties: In homeopathy, it is used for colds and to strengthen the immune system.

Planting and care

The purple Echinacea 'Aloha' is preferably planted in spring, in a mixture of potting soil and garden soil. Mulch the base in May to retain moisture in summer, as it is sensitive to water shortage. Trim faded flowers as they appear. Divide the clump when flowering slows down. It is a rhizome plant that can become invasive. It is susceptible to aphid attacks and powdery mildew.
