The new varieties of American Echinacea Purpurea, such as 'Tangerine Dream', require specific research areas with humid summers and dry winters to thrive and live for several years. Otherwise, they only survive for a maximum of 2 years. Unfortunately, these are not the conditions we experience in Belgium and northern France. However, if you still want to plant them in your garden, you should plant the young plants in spring (never in autumn) and ideally in deeply loosened soil with the addition of Rhine sand (from the river) at a ratio of 1/3 to 1/2. Plant them on a small mound, but ultimately, their survival in the garden will depend on the weather.

Description

Echinacea Tangerine Dream is a perennial plant that blooms from July to September and takes some time to establish. It produces large mandarin-orange flowers with an intense yet soft colour that does not fade. Its petals slightly incline downwards and overlap slightly.

This echinacea can reach a height of 60 cm (24in) with perpetual flowering. It is very hardy and has deciduous foliage.

It can be planted in flower beds, perennial flower borders and pots accompanied by grasses. It pairs well with the Marmalade echinacea, which has the same hue but double flowers, and with Carex testacea, whose orange shoots complement it nicely.

Tangerine Dream is also a nectar-rich plant that attracts birds and butterflies. It is used in homoeopathy.

Planting and care

Echinacea Tangerine Dream likes a sunny or slightly shaded exposure. Plant it in regular, moist, deep soil, preferably well-drained. It withstands climatic variations such as drought, heat and humidity and accepts any type of soil. The echinacea is a hungry plant, we recommend regularly adding a good fertilizer so that it can thrive fully. Cut back the stems when the flowers have faded to promote more flowers.
