Description

Erigeron speciosus Grandiflorus is a pretty easy and vigorous perennial plant, forming a beautiful clump with deciduous matte green foliage. Very floriferous, it will abundantly flower in the sun, throughout the summer, on long stems covered with clusters of large pale mauve inflorescences with a yellow centre. Its flowers, when cut in full bloom, can be used to make magnificent bouquets!

Erigeron, commonly called Fleabane, belongs to the Asteraceae family. The Erigeron speciosus is native to the western part of North America. The Grandiflorus cultivar is an herbaceous perennial plant, forming a clump, and measuring 70 cm (28in) in height, with a spread of 40 cm (16in). It has deciduous foliage that is 5 to 15 cm (2 to 6in) long, with matte green leaves that are long and spatulate at the base, while they are short, narrow, and lanceolate to ovate along the stems. From June to August, it produces long and abundant pale mauve flowers, in the form of terminal inflorescences in heads with a yellow centre, measuring 7 cm (3in) in diameter, gathered in corymbs. Its flowers, rich in nectar, attract pollinating insects.

This Fleabane with large flowers, is very hardy and appreciates the sun as well as well-drained ordinary soil. Similar to summer Asters, it has the advantage of flowering abundantly and for a long time throughout the summer. It will therefore be welcome in sunny flower beds, for a scene of perennials with a country charm, in the company of Bellflower with peach-like leaves, Panicle Phlox, Spike Speedwell, Leucanthemums, Panicle Baby's Breath, Shrubby Sage, Peruvian Lily, Valerian, Yarrow, Lindheimer's Beeblossom, and Slender Galane. Its flowers, when cut in full bloom, have a long vase life and will make magnificent bouquets.

Planting and care

Erigeron speciosus Grandiflorus, a very easy to grow and low maintenance plant, is quite hardy and can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F). It thrives in full sun, with a slight shade during the hottest hours of summer, as well as a medium to fertile, well-drained soil that does not dry out in summer. Planting can be done in April or May, outside the period of frosts, or in autumn. It is important to ensure constant moisture during growth. Well-established plants tolerate drought quite well. Its large flowers often requires staking in summer, especially if exposed to wind or planted in very fertile soil. Remove faded inflorescences to encourage a second flowering. In autumn, cut the stems down to ground level to maintain a beautiful shape and vigorous young plant. Do not hesitate to divide the clump regularly, every two or three years in May, to prevent it from aging and maintain an exceptionally floriferous field of plants. It is highly resistant to diseases but can be susceptible to powdery mildew in summer during dry spells.
