Nothing the first year. The second, one "young plant" produced a very beautiful "flowering" and the other remained quite stunted without "flowers". Attracts red insects that are only seen on this "plant". Truly curious. Note that the "flowers" are much larger than those of the blue thistles I knew.

Description

Eryngium Jos Eijking, also known as Sea Holly or Ornamental Thistle, is a perennial that develops beautiful bluish-grey stems, adorned with cone-shaped umbels of grey-green flowers crowned with magnificent, cobalt blue, spiny bracts.

Hardy to -20°C (-4°F), Eryngium Jos Eijking forms a rosette of deciduous, basal leaves that are deeply incised, with veins of medium green and hints of silver-grey. In August, the flower spikes, initially grey and then intense blue, bear 70cm (28in) tall conical heads of grey-green flowers measuring 8-10cm (3-4in) in diameter, crowned by bracts that turn from grey to cobalt blue. The dried flowers of Eryngium are widely used in dried bouquets.

Eryngium zabelii Jos Eijking thrives in deep, well-drained, even poor and stony soils in warm and sunny locations. This perennial plant readily self-seeds in rocky and deep soils. Plant it in rockeries and dry borders alongside blue Salvias, Perovskia, Pennisetums, and Stipa.

Planting and care

Eryngium zabelii Jos Eijking should be planted from September to April in a well-drained, dry, poor and rocky soil in full sun. In heavy soil or in excessively wet regions, mix compost, sand and gravel with your garden soil and plant in a raised bed. Don't forget to place gravel at the bottom of the hole for good drainage. It is sensitive to winter moisture.
