Description

Eupatorium maculatum Atropurpureum is an impressive perennial that blooms with its large purple inflorescences at the end of the summer holidays.

Originally from wet American meadows, Eupatorium maculatum Atropurpureum, also known as Spotted Joe-Pye Weed or Purple Joe-Pye Weed, is a tall perennial, reaching up to 2m (7ft) in height. From late July to late September, Eupatorium Atropurpureum bears large reddish-purple corymb inflorescences, distinguishing it from other varieties with its intense dark purple almost black stems.

Easy to grow and very hardy, Purple Joe-Pye Weed thrives in rather damp and wet climates, as well as heavy and clay soils. It enjoys being planted at the back of flowerbeds or on the banks of a pond alongside Purple Loosestrife, Meadowsweets, Astilbes, Persicarias, etc...

Planting and care

Eupatorium maculatum Atropurpureum thrives in full sun as well as partial shade. Plant it in normal soil, not too chalky, that is moist and well-drained. It tolerates clay soils but doesn't tolerate overly dry soils. It is a very water-hungry plant. Water it generously during the growing season as it wilts quickly when deprived of rain. Remove faded flowers to prolong its flowering.
