Description

The 'Euphorbia griffithii 'Dixter' is a fantastic variety derived from the Griffith's Spurge, even more colorful than 'Fireglow' to which it resembles. This tall perennial forms a high upright tuft with changing tones throughout the seasons, offering  a constantly renewed chromatic spectacle. It is an extraordinary plant, with an exotic charm, for perennial borders or pots. It is grown in fresh, humus-rich, not too chalky soil, in full sun or partial shade.

The Euphorbia griffithii belongs to the large and eclectic family of Euphorbiaceae. The East of the Himalayas is the birthplace of this large herbaceous rhizomatous perennial. 'Dixter' is a large and particularly colorful cultivar that shows an upright tufted habit, with reddish stems that then turn green, reaching 1m (3ft) in height, and spreading over 60cm (24in) on the ground. In spring, its young foliage is purple, then turns dark green tinged with copper and chocolate while its large inflorescences emerge in June, composed of involucres of bright orange touched with fuchsia when matured resembling flaming wigs. Then autumn turns this magical plant into a torch, composing a symphony of yellow, orange, red, and purple. The whole forms a very colorful combination! Deciduous to semi-evergreen depending on the climate the linear foliage, dark green, tinged with bronze, brown, and purple. Like all euphorbias, this plant emits a sticky latex. This substance can cause skin irritations and is toxic if ingested (all parts of the plant).

The Euphorbia griffithii 'Dixter' is perfectly suited for exotic-style gardens or dry gardens. Its uniqueness will blend well with kniphofias, the large leaves of tetrapanax, the Hedychium assam orange, or yuccas. It shows a majestic silhouette to be featured along a pathway. Equally at home in modern gardens as in a country setting, it pairs well with everything, complimenting any color with the fiery hue of its inflorescences and foliage. To make its flowering even brighter, simply associate it with the purple of irises, alliums, or large-flowered clematis. The combination with grasses is particularly successful. By using it, you can create soft and sinuous mass effects, structure borders, contrast colors and leaf shapes.
