Perennial herbaceous plant of modest size, forming an erect tuft, the Euphorbia waldsteinii 'Betten' presents sumptuous narrow semi-evergreen foliage, bluish-green, as well as a very long spring and summer flowering in a vibrant yellow-green. Ideal for brightening up semi-shade, on the edge of large trees or bushes, as well as in the sun in pots or flower beds.
The Euphorbia waldsteinii, native to Eastern and Central Europe, belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family. The Betten variety is a robust and perfectly hardy herbaceous perennial, forming a beautiful dense and erect tuft, with highly branched stems, measuring 50 to 60 cm (20 to 24in) in all directions. It has lovely semi-evergreen foliage, composed of very fine leaves, of a beautiful blue-green. Very floriferous, it adorns itself from April to July, with a multitude of umbels in a bright acid green to lemon yellow. This Waldstein's Spurge 'Betten' can readily self-sow (if its stems are not cut after flowering) to brighten up every corner of the garden! Euphorbias contain a white sap, called latex, which is highly toxic if ingested and very irritating to the skin. It is therefore recommended to use gloves, especially when cutting back the faded stems.
This Waldstein's Spurge, enjoying both sunlight and semi-shade, can be used to illuminate lightly shaded woodlands with its sumptuous colors. It will also be suitable for cultivation in garden beds or pots on a terrace. A plant of modest growth, it will also fit well in a rockery or on a slope. The use of this Spurge with its bluish-green foliage and aniseed green flowering in flower beds will have a beautiful effect. It will be the perfect companion to Paniculate Hydrangeas, Hostas, Ferns, spring bulbs, Heucheras, and Hellebores.
The specific name waldsteinii refers to Franz de Paula Norbert Wenzel Ludwig Valentin von Waldstein (1759-1823), a German military officer, explorer, and botanist. From 1789, he devoted himself to botany by traveling throughout Hungary.

The Waldstein's 'Spurge Betten' is a perennial plant, very easy to grow, perfectly suited for beginner gardeners and resistant to temperatures below -15°C (5°F). It is not very demanding but resistant to drought, it appreciates a sunny or semi-shaded location, a light and humus-rich soil, but it can also do well in an ordinary, even poor, heavy or chalky soil, from moist to dry. It is important, when handling these plants, to always wear gloves, especially during pruning, as the milky juice flowing from its stems is toxic and irritating to the skin. Requiring little maintenance, simply cut the stems after flowering, at ground level, to encourage the emergence of new shoots and maintain a dense habit. However, it is possible to leave some stems on the plant, in order to obtain seeds that will spread naturally in the garden.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
