Description

This Collection of three Filipendula purpurea in pink and white will embellish the areas of the garden where the soil remains moist even in summer. These perennials, commonly called Queens of the meadow, are prized for the appeal of their large palmate cut foliage and their June-July flowering in airy, slightly fragrant and nectar-rich panicles. They form dense clumps that reach up to 60-70 cm in height, with a spread of 40-50 cm. Both wild and elegant, Filipendulas are suitable for different styles of gardens and do not require special care if the conditions suit them.

The collection consists of:

x 1 Filipendula purpurea: the original species from Japa. Its flowers are a bright fuchsia pink

x 1 Filipendula purpurea 'Alba': white form producing panicles of white flowers slightly dusted with soft pink.

x 1 Filipendula purpurea 'Elegans': horticultural variety with soft pink, well-scented flowers. Vegetation slightly more compact than in the original species.

Plant these Queens of the meadow in rich, clayey to humus-bearing, non-calcareous soil, remaining slightly moist to very moist in summer, especially if the plants are exposed to the sun. These perennials do not tolerate drought. Keep a spacing of 50 to 60 cm so that each plant can reach its full potential. Filipendulas form very beautiful clumps in the foreground of flower beds, along paths and of course on the banks of a water feature. They also make a lush, soft and wild background for small gardens. To accompany them, consider for example Persicaria, Rodgersias and Eupatoriums that like the same conditions.

Planting and care

Filipendula purpurea thrives in moist to wet soil in spring or autumn. It is a hardy plant, tolerating temperatures as low as -15 °C, and will adapt to average soil, even heavy soil, as long as it remains moist. Avoid alkaline soils. It performs best in rich and humus-bearing soil, in full sun or partial shade. During dry summers, we recommend closely monitoring watering to prevent weakening, which would make it susceptible to mildew.

Simply cut back the flower stalks in late summer to maintain it.
