This young plant doesn't thrive in my garden, located in the North of Brittany... the foliage is beautiful but it doesn't produce any flowers.

Description

The Filipendula 'Red Umbrellas' is a new hybrid variety of Filipendula that is quite impressive: this beautifully bushy perennial has large palmate leaves that are nicely cut and adorned with dark purple veins that highlight and accentuate their design. Its delicate flowering in June, with a soft pink colour, adds an exquisite touch. All of this creates a beautiful combination of lushness and lightness, which is stunning in a woodland setting. This variety is shorter than most meadowsweets and is also well-suited for small gardens. It will thrive in wild, romantic, or Japanese gardens.

The 'Red Umbrellas' Filipendula is a recently cultivated hybrid obtained in Japan. It is the result of cross-breeding between Filipendula multijuga, which is native to Japan, and F. palmata, originally from Japan and Siberia, which has passed on its deeply cut large leaves to 'Red Umbrellas'. All of these plants belong to the rosaceae family. It is a rhizomatous perennial plant that thrives in woodland areas and grows in moist to wet soils. With its leafy stems, this Filipendula has a compact, bushy, and upright habit. It reaches a height of about 70 cm (28in) with a spread of 60 cm (24in).

The flowering occurs in early summer, in June-July, in the form of feathery corymbs with a slightly pendant habit. The rose-tinted flower buds open into 5-petaled flowers, 1.5cm (1in) wide, in a delicate mauve-pink color. Its deciduous foliage consists of large palmate leaves, divided into 5 strongly dentate lobes. The dark green, glossy lamina is adorned with purple-violaceous veins.

In the garden, the 'Red Umbrellas' Filipendula thrives in dappled sunlight, under the protective cover of deciduous trees or bushes, in a humid woodland ambiance. It also enjoys being near a pond or wetland, where it can tolerate more sun. Airy, ethereal, almost feathery, it brings a sense of lightness to your borders. It can be easily paired with many other perennials, such as Blackfield Persicaria Knotweed, Purple Joe-Pye Weed, and Chinese Loosestrife. In a woodland setting, it can also be combined with other foliage-rich perennials, such as Bear's Breeches, Sun Power Hosta, or even Palmate Rhubarb.

Planting and care

Plant this 'Red Umbrellas' meadowsweet preferably in partial shade. It is a low-maintenance plant, hardy down to -15°C (5°F), which will thrive in a average soil, even heavy, as long as it remains moist. But it is in a rich and humus-bearing soil that it will truly shine. Water regularly during the first growing season, especially if the summer is dry, to help your meadowsweet establish itself.
