Description

Geum 'Cosmopolitan' is an exceptional avens with a captivating charm, featuring semi-double ivory-white flowers with crinkled petals, infused with peach, and edged with bright pink. The flowers are carried on burgundy-red stems. A pure marvel, beautiful enough to eat, with irresistibly fruity tones.

Cosmopolitan 'Geum' is a hardy perennial that thrives in full sun. It belongs to the Rosaceae family. It reaches a height of 60cm (24in) with a width of 40cm (16in). It forms an upright and dense clump of large deep green, toothed, slightly hairy leaves arranged in a rosette. From this semi-evergreen foliage rise slender purple stems, bearing charming cup-shaped semi-double flowers in terminal panicles from May to July. Resembling miniature roses, these flowers offer subtle, deliciously soft and fruity shades: the petals are creamy-white, flushed with salmon-pink, and edged with bright pink. A sumptuous gradient of colours, worthy of a watercolour, contrasting beautifully with the purple stems.

Hardy and easy to grow, it is a very adaptable plant that thrives in sunny or partially shaded positions, in ordinary, moist but well-drained soil. To fully enjoy its magnificent flowering, this splendid Cocktail variety will be ideally placed at the edge of borders, flower beds, mixed borders, in rockeries, or even in pots. Its flower spikes will make magnificent bouquets in pastel shades. It requires some space to grow well, so make sure to leave room around its base. It will blend beautifully with other spring and summer flowering perennials in fruity sorbet colours (Iris germanica, Rudbeckias, Chrysanthemums, Foxgloves, Dahlias, etc.).

Planting and care

Geum 'Cosmopolitan' is hardy to at least -15°C (5°F). It appreciates a sunny or semi-shaded location and normal, light, moist but well-drained soil. It does not tolerate humidity. Avoid waterlogged soils in winter. Planting can be done in spring or autumn. Leave enough space around the base for the plant to grow. Be sure to regularly remove faded flowers to encourage the blooming of new flower buds and ensure continuous flowering. Since its lifespan is relatively short, divide the clumps every 3 or 4 years, in spring or autumn. Regular organic fertilisation is beneficial. Very resistant to diseases, it is occasionally susceptible to attacks from sawfly larvae, which can damage its leaves.
