Description

25 years ago, Gypsophila aretioides was a rarity in the small world of alpine enthusiasts. Today, hardly anyone is interested in it. It forms a cushion so tight that it appears artificial. After about ten years, the plant becomes a small hemispherical dome measuring 10 to 20cm (4 to 8in) in diameter. The tiny and closely imbricate evergreen leaves are a beautiful glossy dark green. It bears tiny white flowers that appear to be resting on the foliage.

Planting and care

Many experts suggest this plant should only be grown in an alpine greenhouse. We have been cultivating it for 20 years in a trough, outdoors, simply protected from rain by a frame in winter. Suitable for any poor, well-drained soil, even limestone. It needs the warmest possible exposure to see it flower.
