Description

The Geranium cinereum 'Ballerina', also known as the Ashy Cranesbill, is a variety of dwarf perennial Geranium, of alpine type, which stands out for its uninterrupted pink flowering from May to August. Its spreading habit and undemanding nature make it a perfect ground cover for rockeries, the base of roses or even borders.

Flowering, generous, easy to grow, perennial Geraniums have everything to please. Especially since, unlike Balcony Geraniums (which are actually Pelargoniums) with which they are sometimes confused, they are perfectly hardy, at least up to - 15 ° (59°F) and therefore remain in the ground all winter.

Native to the Pyrenees and belonging to the Geraniaceae family, the Geranium cinereum 'Ballerina' has a spreading habit with an average height of 20 cm (8in) and a width of 30 cm (12in). Its small pink flowers are finely striated and emerge above a pretty evergreen foliage, composed of very small, highly divided, grayish leaves.

The Ashy Cranesbill Ballerina is an alpine plant armed for extreme conditions, which makes its cultivation easy and worry-free. You can plant it in full sun or partial shade, in any soil, even ordinary, as long as it is well-drained.

In the garden, you can place it in a rockery or even in a pot with, for example, the Basket of Silver and the Origanum Kent Beauty. It also gracefully dresses the base of roses and makes very pretty borders.

Did you know?

The Ashy Cranesbill is an alpine plant and yet it is native to the Pyrenees. This may seem curious, but, the term alpine refers to all plants at high altitude (over 1000 meters (3281 feet)) and not only to plants native to the Alps.

Planting and care

Perennial Geraniums can be planted in the garden during spring or autumn (frost-free period). They are quite tolerant of the location and soil quality, although it is ideal to plant them in cool, humus-bearing, and well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade. Easy to grow, they do not require any specific care, but we recommend removing faded flowers and leaves from July to September to encourage new growth.
