Description

The perennial Geranium endressii makes remarkable ground cover with its unwavering resilience, exceptional vigour, and its delicate dentate flowers of pale and changing pink that succeed each other throughout the summer. This plant will undoubtedly thrive in all gardens without maintenance, subject to the whims of nature.

Geranium endressii belongs to the Geraniaceae family. It is native to the Pyrenees, where it is found in wet or marshy areas. It is a rhizomatous and creeping plant that forms impressive mats up to 40 cm (16in) high. Flowering takes place in summer in the form of small pale pink blooms, open cups that darken with age. It is a perennial with evergreen foliage in mild climates, semi-evergreen elsewhere. The leaves are dark green, shiny, simple and opposite. They are palmate, petiolate with a dentate edge and palmate veins. Their size is approximately 20 to 30 centimetres (8 to 12 inches) long. This plant spreads through rhizomes and can become invasive, but it neutralizes weeds.

Geranium endressii thrives equally in the sun and in the shade. It is not afraid of the roots of other plants and shrubs, colonizes inhospitable slopes, and grows in all types of soil even alkaline and/or clay. Feel free to trim it after summer flowering, it will be even more floriferous in autumn. Its only enemy is drought. For holiday let or wild gardens, at the back of gardens blending into the countryside, or for contemplative gardeners, Geranium endressii is a real boon. If you are tired of mowing the lawn, cleaning the base of hedges, and want to cover the ground under shrubs, install and multiply this plant to your heart's content. Happy in wet areas, it will also look good around water features.

Planting and care

Plant Geranium endressii in any type of soil, including alkaline and/or clay. It only dislikes drought. It bears more flowers in the sun, but also thrives in partial shade. Prune in August to regenerate the foliage and encourage the reblooming of the flowers. This plant can become invasive, so it is wise to place it where it can spread freely. You can also remove faded flowers to prevent it from self-seeding everywhere.
