Description

The 'Karen Wouters' hybrid perennial Geranium is adorned with rare and bright colour between June and July. The large pale lavender pink flowers are clearly veined with violet. It forms a flowering and ground-covering dome, adorned with fuzzy, crinkled and slightly dissected foliage. It is an easy-to-grow plant which tolerates both sun and shade, in well-drained and humus-rich soil.

The perennial geranium 'Karen Wouters' belongs to the Geraniaceae family. It comes from a seedling of the 'Chantilly' variety. The bushy habit gives it a silhouette wider than it is tall, reaching 40 cm (16in) in height and spreading to 70 cm (28in). It flowers at the top of branched stems. The corollas, with a diameter of 30 to 35 mm (1in), have an intermediate and strangely bright colour, between pink and pale blue, with distinct violet veins. The dark anthers stand out well from the centre. The foliage is deciduous, composed of large crinkled leaves, pale green, slightly dissected and lightly pubescent.

Like many other perennial geranium species, Geranium 'Karen Wouters' is a superb plant, providing nectar and pollen for numerous insects such as butterflies, bees etc. Ideal for a cottage garden, in flowerbeds, along pathways or on slopes, this geranium will add a colorful touch to perennial beds without having to worry about its exposure to sunlight - even if it is slightly less showy, it blooms very well even in the shade. It will prove to be a good companion for columbines, peonies, lupins, bellflowers, poppies, and tall daisies.

Planting and care

The 'Karen Wouters' perennial Geranium prefers partial shade and a moist to dry, well-drained soil, even if it is alkaline. In heavy soil, incorporate leaf compost into the garden soil at planting. It tolerates shade, although it will be slightly less floriferous.
