Description

Geranium x cantabrigiense 'Crystal Rose' is a small spreading perennial ground cover that is easy to grow. It is known for its spring to summer flowering in an almost fluorescent pink and its foliage that turns orange in autumn. It is a low-growing plant with dense and pleasantly scented foliage. It spreads moderately through rhizomes without being invasive. This compact and colourful variety is ideal for containers, borders, or ground cover.

Geranium x cantabrigiense 'Crystal Rose' belongs to the Geraniaceae family. It is a cultivar of the natural hybrid Geranium x cantabrigiense, which itself is a cross between Geranium dalmaticum native to the Balkan coast, and Geranium macrorrhizum. 'Crystal Rose' is a herbaceous perennial plant with a very low and spreading growth habit. This cultivar slowly forms a cushion that is 15-20 cm tall and spreads through stolons to a width of 30 to 35 cm. Flowering begins in May-June, depending on the climate, and continues until July-August. The deep and saturated pink flowers of this variety are adorned with long stamens. They are clustered on slender stems that rise slightly above the foliage. This dense and aromatic foliage, is composed of small round and palmate leaves. It persists if the winter is not too harsh. It is an intense green during the growing season and turns orange in autumn and winter. This perennial geranium prefers a humus-bearing soil that is not too dry but well-drained.

Geranium x cantabrigiense 'Crystal Rose' is a low-maintenance ground cover that thrives in well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade. It can decorate the base of trees, add colour to borders, and elegantly highlight the curve of a pathway. This compact variety naturally fits well on balconies and terraces. It is also charming in borders and rock gardens. In a flowerbed, it can be paired with dwarf columbines, bellflowers for rock gardens and walls, or rock cresses. For a beautiful effect within 3 years, plant 9 per square metre.

Planting and care

This perennial geranium x cantabrigiense 'Crystal Rose' enjoys full sun, but it also tolerates partial shade. Plant it in well-drained soil enriched with compost and not too dry in summer. Plant it early in spring or autumn and water regularly to help the young plants establish. Faded flowers can be cut to encourage reblooming. Clumps can be divided every three years in spring. This easy-going plant requires little maintenance, but you will need to water it during prolonged dry spells. Geraniums grown in pots will appreciate liquid geranium fertiliser as well as regular watering.
