The Himalayan Geranium or Himalayan cranesbill is a vigorous and resilient perennial that forms beautiful cushions covered with large cup-shaped flowers in a lovely blue or purple, depending on the varieties, single or even double in the 'Plenum' (Birch Double). Abundant foliage, deeply divided and strongly veined, which beautifully colours in autumn, is another asset of this superb geranium for mass plantings. It is also an excellent ground cover and a charming plant, slowly spreading thanks to its underground rootstocks. It prefers the sun, elegantly tolerates winter cold and occasional drought, and is undemanding on the nature of the soil. Like many of its relatives, the Himalayan Geranium is well suited to wildlife gardens, which attract many pollinating insects. It is, therefore, an ideal plant for cottage gardens, rockeries, and borders. It also thrives in large pots, with watering and fertilisation as needed.
