Description

The Nodose Perennial Geranium is an excellent shade geranium. Native to European forests, it is very cold-resistant and grows in the shade of large trees. This perennial geranium reaches a height of 50 cm (20in). On long, stiff and knotty stems (which earned it the nickname "knotty geranium"), lavender blue flowers streaked with dark violet bloom. The flower measures about 3cm (1in) in diameter.

This Geranium has abundant spring flowering that lasts until early autumn. Its palmate leaves, very characteristic, are tender green, highly glossy and bossed, typical of plants adapted to the low light of the undergrowth.

It generously self-sows and colonizes shaded areas of the garden. It can be cultivated on slopes in isolation or in shade beds with heucheras, Hakonechloa, Ophiopogon, astrantias or lysimachias.

Planting and care

Place the Geranium nodosum in the shade or semi-shade in preferably cool but draining soil. To plant your pot, dig the soil to a depth of 20 cm cubed, crumbling the soil well and placing a soil improver such as blood, fish and blood at the bottom of the planting hole. After removing the plant from its pot, cover the top of the root ball with 3 cm of soil, fill the hole and water thoroughly to remove any air pockets. In dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks to help the root ball take hold.
