Description

Helianthemum Elfenbeinglanz is an excellent rockery plant. It forms a spreading subshrub, semi-evergreen, ground-covering and compact, remarkable for its long and generous summer flowering of single ivory flowers with a yellow egg-shaped center. It will offer you a multitude of pretty fried eggs along the borders of flower beds or in rockeries!

This Elfenbeinglanz hybrid is a low, spreading and dense undershrub, forming a cushion measuring 20 cm (8 in) high with a spread of 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12 in). Its semi-evergreen foliage, composed of small linear, opposite, shiny dark green leaves, highlights abundant and bright cream-white and yellow summer flowering. From May to August, it is covered with a multitude of small 2.5 cm (1 in) diameter cup-shaped flowers, with five petals, ivory with a yellow centre, adorned with a cluster of golden stamens. Belonging to the family of Cistaceae, Helianthemum is similar to Cistus, with its delicate and beautiful flowers as well as its strong preference for sunlight. Helianthemum means "flower of the sun" in Greek, an appropriate name for these flowers that only open in the presence of strong sunlight. Its delicate little flowers only last a few days, but they continuously bloom throughout the summer, and even into autumn.

Helianthemum is the ideal plant to enhance a rocky garden or sunny slope, send cascading over a wall, or brighten up paving. It will also have a beautiful effect in the foreground of perennial flower beds or raised borders. It is also well suited for cultivation in pots or containers on terraces. It is perfect for creating green walls and green roofs. It can be associated with many other rock plants (Erigeron, Shrubby Cinquefoil, Shrubby Wallflower), but also with perennials such as Lavender, German Iris, Cistus, Sneezeweed, Convolvulus, Coreopsis and Agapanthus.

Planting and care

Very easy to grow and low maintenance, Helianthemum Elfenbeinglanz enjoys being planted in full sun, in a neutral or limestone soil, perfectly drained, even dry and rich in gravel or sand. Not tolerating stagnant moisture in winter it will be necessary, especially in cold and wet climates, to lighten the soil during planting by adding gravel and sand to improve drainage. The Helianthemum is a very hardy plant that can withstand temperatures between -15 and -20°C (5 and -4 °F). Being highly drought-tolerant, it only requires regular and moderate watering in the first year after planting; afterwards, the plant can manage on its own. At the end of flowering, pinch off the faded stems and foliage to encourage a second flowering in autumn. Lightly pruning the clump with hedge shears can be done after flowering to maintain a dense foliage and prevent the centre from becoming bare.
