Description

Helianthemum 'Lawrenson's Pink' is a compact, semi-evergreen, spreading undershrub. It is an excellent ground-covering plant, which is remarkable for its long and generous summer flowering, with single, deep pink flowers with a golden yellow heart. An explosion of vibrant and sparkling colours, plant on the edge of flower beds or in rockeries!

Belonging to the Cistaceae family, Helianthemum is similar to Cistus in terms of the shape and delicacy of its flowers, as well as its strong preference for sunlight. Helianthemum means "flower of the sun" in Greek, an appropriate name for these flowers that only open in the presence of strong sunlight. Its delicate little flowers only last a few days, but they constantly renew themselves throughout the summer, even until autumn. This hybrid is a low-growing, dense undershrub, forming a cushion of thin and woody branches that spread on the ground. It measures 20 cm (7.9 in) tall with a spread of 30 cm to 40 cm (11.8 in to 15.7 in). Its semi-evergreen foliage, composed of small, opposite, dark green and shiny linear leaves, enhances the abundant and luminous pink summer flowering. From May to August, it is covered with a multitude of small flowers measuring 3 cm (1.2 in) in diameter. They are cup-shaped, with five petals, bright pink with a yellow ochre heart, and adorned with a bouquet of golden stamens.

Very easy to grow, Helianthemum 'Lawrenson's Pink' appreciates well-drained soils, even rocky ones, and sunny and hot exposures. South-facing and scorching situations suit it very well, as it is not afraid of heat. This floriferous and beautifully coloured dwarf shrub can be used as a rockery plant or ground cover, offering a wide range of uses. Helianthemum is the ideal plant to enhance a rocky garden, a sunny slope, or cascading over a wall. It will also have a beautiful effect at the forefront of perennial flower beds or raised flower beds. It is well suited for cultivation in pots or containers on terraces. It is perfect for the creation of green walls and green roofs. It can be planted with many other rock plants (Erigeron, Dianthus, Carnations), as well as perennial plants such as, Lavender, Iris germanica, Cistus, Helenium, Convolvulus, Coreopsis, and Agapanthus.

Planting and care

Helianthemum 'Lawrenson's Pink' is undemanding and very easy to grow. Plant in full sun, in well-drained neutral or calcareous soil. It can tolerate dry soil rich in gravel or sand. It does not tolerate stagnant moisture in winter, so lighten the soil during planting by adding gravel and sand to improve drainage. Helianthemum is a very hardy plant that can withstand temperatures between -15° C to -20° C (5° F to -4° F). Being very drought-tolerant, it only requires regular and moderate watering during the first year after planting; afterwards, the plant can manage on its own. At the end of flowering, pinch off the faded stems and foliage to encourage autumn regrowth. A light pruning of the clump with hedge shears can be done after flowering to maintain a dense vegetation and prevent the centre from becoming bare.
