Description

Hemerocallis 'Corky' is a variety that stands out for its compact habit and its generous summer flowering with small golden yellow trumpets enhanced by brown-red sepals and stems! This herbaceous perennial, known for its long lifespan, is perfectly hardy and exceptionally robust. It requires little care and only needs a minimum amount of light. Resistant to drought and adaptable to all types of soil, it will be even more beautiful if it is planted in a cool, rich, and deep location. The compact size of this cultivar makes it suitable for small spaces, borders, and container planting.

The genus Hemerocallis belongs to the family Liliaceae or Hemerocallidaceae according to classifications.  These are hardy perennial plants with deciduous or semi-evergreen foliage. 'Corky' reaches a height of 60 cm (24in) with a spread of 40 cm (16in). The flowers are smaller than those of other varieties and are particularly delicate and tubular. Individually, they last only one day, but they continuously bloom between June and August. Hemerocallis plants have short rhizomes and fleshy roots. The stems are robust and produce beautiful bouquets. The foliage is linear and semi-evergreen. Hemerocallis plants have short rhizomes and fleshy roots, and they tolerate dry soils but are more lush and floriferous in cool, rich, and deep soil.

These plants are very easy to grow and thrive in both shade and sun. Some of them can be slightly invasive, so it is recommended to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn after flowering. Hemerocallis is often referred to as 'the perfect perennial plant' due to its vibrant colours and ability to tolerate any type of environment. It also adds a touch of exuberance that blends well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps at the back of your flower beds. Summer bulbs can be planted alongside hemerocallis. 'Corky' will fit perfectly into a romantic garden with campanulas, penstemons, perennial flaxes, or phlox.  On a balcony or patio, large pots of at least 30 cm (12in) in depth should be provided and dwarf varieties should be chosen. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and decorate desserts.

Many varieties have been developed in Japan, where they are very popular. The flowers of these plants come in a wide range of colours and shapes. More than 60,000 cultivars, mostly resulting from hybridisation by gardening enthusiasts, are listed, appreciated, and studied by international Hemerocallis societies.

Planting and care

Plant your Hemerocallis 'Corky' in good garden soil that is not too heavy with clay and that is enriched with humus and compost. In these conditions, your perennial will have good tolerance towards summer droughts and will not suffer from winter frosts. Very easy to grow, this variety is not susceptible to parasites or diseases, so there is no need to treat it and rodents are not interested in it. Daylilies thrive both in partial shade and in full sun, with 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight being sufficient. Plant by burying the collar 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) below the surface. If you plant several of them, do not space them too close together as the gaps will be quickly filled. For a few weeks after planting, it is good to keep the soil moist. Divide the clumps preferably in autumn after flowering.
