Description

The Daylily or Hemerocallis 'Janice Brown' forms a beautiful bouquet of large round and enticing flowers in two shades of pink. Its undulating petals are satin, flesh pink around a central halo of deeper pink that extends to a green heart. This variety is part of recent floriferous, robust and vigorous cultivars. Its foliage is semi-evergreen, and its sturdy flower stems are filled with numerous buds. It is a trouble-free perennial, guaranteed to succeed.

The genus Hemerocallis belongs to the Liliaceae family. They are  hardy perennial plants with deciduous, sometimes semi-evergreen foliage. The 'Janice Brown' variety forms a fairly dense clump that will reach a height of 55 cm (22in), with a relative spread of 50 cm (20in). Daylilies tend to spread a bit when they like their surroundings. The flowers measure about 12 cm (5in) in diameter; the petals in this variety are thick, slightly wavy and have a satin appearance. Each flower lasts only one day, but the flowering continuously renews itself over a beautiful period between June and July. The stems are sturdy and allow for beautiful bouquets. The foliage is linear and semi-evergreen. Daylilies are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots that tolerate dry soils but are more lush and floriferous in moist soil.

Very easy to grow, these plants thrive in both shade and sun. Some can be invasive, so don't hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn, after flowering. The daylily is often called "the perfect perennial" because of its vibrant colours and its ability to tolerate any type of environment, but also due to its lack of modesty, it is beautifully exuberant and blends well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps at the back of your borders. All summer flowering bulbs can be planted alongside daylilies. 'Janice Brown' will perfectly fit into the setting of a romantic garden, with bellflowers, penstemons, perennial flaxes or phloxes by its side. Large pots of at least 30 cm (12in) deep on a balcony or patio should be provided, choosing from the dwarf varieties. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and decorate desserts.

Planting and care

Plant your Hemerocallis 'Janice Brown' in well-draining garden soil that is not too clayey and enriched with humus and compost. This will allow your perennial to withstand summer droughts and winter frosts. This variety is easy to grow and not susceptible to pests or diseases, so no treatment is required, and rodents are not attracted to it. Daylilies can grow both in partial shade and full sun, with 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight sufficient—plant by burying the base 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) below the surface. If planting multiple plants, ensure enough space between them, as the spaces will quickly fill up. For a few weeks after planting, ensure the soil is moderately moist, but do not overwater. It is advisable to divide the plants, preferably in autumn after flowering.
