Description

Daylily or Hemerocallis 'Siloam Ribbon Candy' is distinguished by its round and full flowers, a tender purple-pink colour with a central wine-coloured halo and a green throat. Its undulate petals add to its charm. While not huge, the flowers are bright and bloom for a long period on elegant foliage. It is a problem-free perennial that will thrive anywhere in full sun or partial shade.

The Hemerocallis genus belongs to the Liliaceae family. These are hardy and deciduous, sometimes semi-evergreen, perennials. The 'Siloam Ribbon Candy' variety forms a fairly dense clump that reaches a height of 55 to 60 cm (22 to 24in), with a relative spread of 50 cm (20 in). Hemerocallis tend to spread a bit when they like the soil. The flowers measure about 9 cm (4 in) in diameter, and the petals of this variety are thick, wide, slightly wavy, and have well-undulated edges. Each flower lasts only one day, but flowering continuously occurs over a beautiful period between June and August. The stems are sturdy and filled with numerous buds. The foliage is abundant, linear, bright green, and deciduous. Hemerocallis are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots that tolerate dry soils but are more lush and floriferous in moist soil.

Very easy to grow, these plants thrive equally well in shade or sun. Some of them can be a little invasive, so do not hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn after flowering. The daylily is often called the "perfect perennial plant" due to its vibrant colours and its ability to tolerate any type of environment, as well as its lack of modesty: its beautiful exuberance blends well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps in the background of your borders. All summer bulb flowers can be planted alongside Hemerocallis. 'Siloam Ribbon Candy' will fit perfectly in the setting of a romantic garden, with campanulas, penstemons, perennial flaxes, or phlox planted alongside. On a balcony or terrace, large pots of at least 30 cm (12 in) deep should be used, and dwarf varieties should be chosen. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and garnish desserts.

Planting and care

Plant your Hemerocallis 'Siloam Ribbon Candy' in good garden soil that is not too clayey and that is enriched with humus and compost. Under these conditions, your perennial will have good tolerance to summer droughts and will not suffer from winter frosts. This variety is very easy to grow and is not susceptible to parasites or diseases, so there is no need to treat it and rodents are not interested in it. Daylilies thrive both in partial shade and in full sun, with 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight being sufficient. Plant them by burying the collar 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2 in) below the surface. If you plant several of them, do not place them too closely to each other as the gaps will quickly fill up. For a few weeks after planting, it is advisable to keep the soil sufficiently moist. It is best to divide the clumps in autumn after flowering.
