Description

Daylily or Hemerocallis 'Snowy Apparition' is an opulent and generous variety, bearing large ivory-white flowers washed with pale salmon, with fleshy and undulate petals along the edges. The heart of the flower is pale yellow, tinged with green. It quickly forms very flowery clumps, remarkable in a white garden. It is a vigorous and easy-to-grow perennial, whose success is guaranteed in fertile soil that is not too dry. It flowers rather early and reblooms well. Truly superb!

The Hemerocallis genus belongs to the Liliaceae family. These are  perennial and hardy plants with deciduous or sometimes semi-evergreen foliage. The 'Snowy Apparition' variety grows in a fairly dense clump that will reach 80 to 90 cm (32 to 35 in) in height when in bloom, 50 cm (20 in) for the foliage, with a relative spread of 80 cm (32 in). Hemerocallis tends to spread a bit when they like the soil. The flowers, which are rather triangular in shape, are slightly fragrant. They measure about 16 cm (6 in) in diameter. The petals in this variety are thick, with a wavy and gracefully undulating texture. Each flower lasts no more than a day, and fades in a delicious salmon-pink colour. Flowering continually renews itself over a beautiful period between June and July, and even into August if the soil remains moist. The stems are robust and filled with numerous buds. The bright green foliage is linear and deciduous. Hemerocallis are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots that tolerate dry soils, but are more opulent and more floriferous in fresh soil.

Very easy to grow, these plants thrive both in shade and in full sun. Some of them can be a bit invasive, so do not hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn, after flowering. Hemerocallis is often called "the perfect perennial plant" because of its vibrant colous and its ability to tolerate any type of environment, but also due to its lack of modesty: it is beautifully exuberant and blends well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps in the background of your flower beds. All summer bulb flowers can be planted alongside Hemerocallis. 'Snowy Apparition' will fit perfectly into the composition of a white garden. A 'White Prosperity' gladiolus planted at its base will be delighted to find a natural support, saving you from staking it, while a white oriental lily will be highlighted against it, and next to a viburnum, for example, it will take over from its earlier spring flowering. On a balcony or terrace, large pots of at least 30 cm (12 in) deep should be provided and dwarf varieties should be chosen. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and garnish desserts.

Planting and care

Plant your Hemerocallis 'Snowy Apparition' in a good garden soil that is not too clayey and that is enriched with humus and compost. In these conditions, your perennial will have good tolerance to summer droughts and will not suffer from winter frosts. Very easy to grow, this variety is not susceptible to parasites or diseases, so there is no need to treat it and rodents are not interested in it. Hemerocallis thrive equally well in partial shade and in full sun, with 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight being sufficient. Plant them by burying the neck 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2 in) below the surface. Do not plant them too closely together if you are planting multiple plants, as the gaps will quickly fill in. For a few weeks after planting, it is advisable to keep the soil fairly moist. It is best to divide the clumps in autumn after flowering.
