Description

Daylily or Hemerocallis Spacecoast Starburst offers stunning round and fleshy, iridescent flowers, with very fringed petals bordered and edged in gold. Its delightful colour is truly unusual, in a blend of lavender-pink and soft orange-yellow plunging towards a wide golden-yellow throat. Flowering begins quite early in the season, around mid-June, and often continues until August if the plant is not lacking in water or nutrients. Its evergreen foliage is elegant. It is a unique variety and a treasure for sunny or semi-shaded flower beds!

The Hemerocallis genus belongs to the Liliaceae family. These are perennial and hardy plants with deciduous foliage and are sometimes semi-evergreen or evergreen depending on the severity of the winter. The 'Spacecoast Starburst' variety is a tetraploid horticultural creation dating back to 1998, awarded in 2002 and 2005. This perennial grows in a fairly dense clump that will reach a height of 60 cm (24 in), with a relative spread of 50 cm (20 in). Hemerocallis tend to spread a little when they like the soil. The very round flowers measure about 15 cm (6 in) in diameter. The petals in this variety are thick and wavy, with an intensely undulated edge. Each flower lasts no more than a day, but flowering renews continuously over a beautiful period between June and August. The stems are robust and filled with numerous buds. The foliage is linear and semi-evergreen to evergreen. Hemerocallis are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots that tolerate heat and dry soils, but are more opulent and more floriferous in cool soil.

Very easy to grow, these plants thrive equally well in shade or sun. Some of them are a bit invasive, so do not hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn, after flowering. Hemerocallis is often called the "perfect perennial plant" due to its vibrant colours and its ability to tolerate any type of environment, but also due to its lack of modesty: it displays a beautiful exuberance that goes well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps in the background of your flower beds. All summer flowering bulbous plants can be planted alongside hemerocallis. 'Spacecoast Starburst' is an interesting variety for its long flowering period that will accompany that of white roses, perennial flax, large daisies, echinaceas, lilies, or foliage plants like fennel, or blue grasses (Helictrotrichon sempervirens, Elymus arenarius). On a balcony or terrace, large pots of at least 30 cm (12 in) deep should be used and dwarf varieties should be chosen. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and garnish desserts.

Planting and care

Plant your daylily in good garden soil that is not too clayey and that is enriched with humus and compost. Under these conditions, your perennial will have good tolerance to summer droughts and will not suffer from winter frosts. Very easy to grow, this variety is not susceptible to parasites or diseases, so there is no need to treat it and rodents are not interested in it. Daylilies thrive both in partial shade and in full sun, with 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight being sufficient. Plant them by burying the collar 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2 in) below the surface. Do not plant them too closely to each other if you are planting several, as the gaps will quickly fill up. For a few weeks after planting, it is a good idea to keep the soil fairly moist. It is best to divide the clump in autumn after flowering.
