Description

Hemerocallis 'Veins of Truth', or Daylily, is a variety of beautiful stature, perpetual and gently scented, that bears large, round and delicately coloured flowers. The flowers, of a soft yellow colour, have a veined eye and are brushed with light salmon-red and pale stripes, around a green throat. This tetraploid cultivar develops evergreen foliage in winter. Its flowering is renewed throughout the summer. A very beautiful perennial, easy to combine in the garden!

The Hemerocallis genus belongs to the Liliaceae or Hemerocallidaceae family, depending on classifications. These are perennial and hardy plants whose foliage is deciduous, and sometimes semi-evergreen. The 'Veins of Truth' variety, obtained in 2000 by Hansen, is nocturnal, meaning its flowers open at night and close during the day. It is a tetraploid variety, which has a double set of chromosomes, giving it increased vigour as well as oversized flowers compared to classic diploid varieties. It forms a fairly dense clump that will reach about 81 cm (32 in) in height, with a relative spread of 50-60 cm (20-24 in). Hemerocallis tend to spread a little when they like the terrain. The flowers measure about 14 cm (6 in) in diameter. They are composed of 3 large, thick, slightly wavy, rounded petals with a very undulated edge, and 3 smaller tepals. The large petals are adorned with a salmon macule veined with red and a pale yellow-green median line. The throat is green, bordered with yellow. Each flower blooms in the evening, lasting little more than a day, but flowering is renewed continuously between late June and late September. The floral stems have 4 branches and carry up to 35 flower buds that open one after another. The foliage is linear, ribbon-like, bright green, and evergreen in winter. Hemerocallis are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots that tolerate dry soils, but are more opulent and more floriferous in moist soil.

Very easy to grow, these plants thrive equally well in shade and in the sun. Some of them are a little invasive, so do not hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn, after flowering. Hemerocallis is often called "the perfect perennial plant", because of its vibrant colours and its ability to tolerate any type of environment, but also due to its lack of modesty: it is beautifully exuberant and blends well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps at the back of your borders. All summer bulb flowers (lilies, agapanthus, ixias, etc.) can be planted alongside hemerocallis. 'Veins of Truth' is a refined and rather discreet variety, which enhances all the flowers in the garden. It goes well with grasses, landscape roses, lupines, and other baptisias, for example. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and garnish desserts.

Planting and care

Plant your Hemerocallis 'Veins of Truth' in a good garden soil that is not too clayey and that is enriched with humus and compost. In these conditions, your perennial will have good tolerance to summer droughts and will not suffer from winter frosts. Very easy to grow, this variety is not susceptible to parasites or diseases, so it is not necessary to treat it and rodents are not interested in it. Daylilies thrive both in partial shade and in full sun, so 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight will be enough for them. Plant by burying the collar 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2 in) below the surface. Do not plant them too closely together if you are planting several, as the gaps will quickly fill in. For a few weeks after planting, it is a good idea to keep the soil fairly moist. It is preferable to divide the clumps in autumn, after flowering.
