Collection items (4 plants)

Description

This collection brings together four different varieties of heucheras and tiarellas with variously coloured foliage, most often evergreen in winter, perfect for brightening up moist shade. These are very hardy perennial ground cover plants, mostly evergreen in winter, which also offer spring to summer flowering with upright spikes adorned with small white to pinkish bells. Stunning in shaded borders, they are perfect in containers.

The collection consists of 4 plants:

- x 1 Tiarella 'Angel Wings' : semi-evergreen foliage, green with reddish-brown veins, topped in late spring with floral stems with pink buds, opening into small white flowers.

- x 1 Tiarella 'Tiger stripe' :  a magnificent hybrid variety, with wide apple-green leaves irregularly maculated with purple to brown at the centre, taking on extraordinary autumnal shades of pink, salmon, cream, red, purple, and black. Evergreen foliage, white spring flowering.

- x 1 Heuchera 'Paprika' :  its evergreen foliage evolves from flaming orange-red to paprika veined with red in autumn. White summer flowering.

- x 1 Heuchera Binoche : a superb contrast between almost black dark purple foliage and white summer flowering. Evergreen in winter.

 Labeled separately.

Heucheras and tiarellas belong to the Saxifragaceae family, they are quite similar plants that appreciate similar growing conditions. These perennials find their place in an understory or in a damp rock garden alongside ferns, hostas, Impatiens balfouri, Solomon's seals, and astilbes. They can also be used in shady containers or pots. In this case, they should be planted in a well-drained potting mix without excess fertilizer, with watering being monitored in summer and reduced in winter. Pots will need protection against cold winter winds.

Planting and care

Tiarella and heuchera are planted in spring or autumn. They thrive in moist, well-drained, light, neutral to acidic soils. They should be planted in partial shade or shade (the colour of the foliage may be duller in full shade). Plant them in loose soil that retains moisture, lightening it with coarse sand and compost if it is too heavy, and consider mulching. These perennials do not tolerate very hot conditions. They require little maintenance and pruning is not necessary unless the foliage is damaged or for rejuvenation. Fertilize potted plants and divide old, sparse clumps in spring. During winter, the heuchera renews its foliage, so it is best to prune the previous year's leaves from January to February.
