Heuchera Beaujolais
Heuchera Beaujolais
Heuchera Beaujolais
Coming from Beaujolais myself with a vine-grower father, I couldn't overlook this young plant! Its silvery reflections are stunning! It arrived rather weak compared to what you can find in stores, and it took time to settle in the spring of 2022 and feared the summer drought (even though it was placed in a covered outdoor area in partial shade!). Nevertheless, it survived the winter well and seems to want to double in size this year! A midrib is growing since mid-April. The habit of the plant appears to be more vigorous in its second year.

Heuchera 'Beaujolais' is a vigorous variety of heuchera, refined in every way, easy to pair with other shade plants. Its ample foliage, doubled in purple, displays bright shades of pink and purple-veined grey, remaining decorative throughout the year if the winter is not too harsh. Its large lobed leaves form a dense and wide cushion adorned with delicate summer flowering in white-cream, on light spikes. Heucheras are perfect for bordering paths or shaded flower beds, where they create astonishing ground covers with incredibly varied colours. Those without a garden can easily grow them in a beautiful pot on the terrace or balcony.
Heuchera 'Beaujolais' is a perennial plant with a short rhizome from the Saxifragaceae family. It is a hybrid of Heuchera villosa, native to the mountains of the southeastern United States, obtained in France in 2007 by Thierry Delabroye. It will reach 30-40 cm (12-16 in) in height for the foliage and 50 cm (20 in) in width in 4 to 5 years. This heuchera forms a very compact mound of leaves. The foliage is the plant's major asset: its large evergreen leaves are rounded with lobed laminae; they start out a pink-purple-violet colour and change colour somewhat throughout the seasons, lightening in summer under a silver veil that reveals highly coloured veins, of an old reddish-wine colour. The underside of the foliage is more purple. The leaves of this heuchera have strong veins. Flowering, light and airy, takes place in July-August, sometimes earlier depending on the climate and weather. The flowers, barely tinged with pink when they open and later becoming cream-white, are arranged along an erect stem 50-55 cm (20-22 in) tall. This plant has a shallow root system and performs particularly well during hot summers if the soil remains moist.
Heuchera 'Beaujolais' deserves a special place in the garden, bordering a path or in a small shaded and cool rockery, not far from a walkway to be able to admire it as often as possible. It also adapts very well to container gardening. When planted in a row at the edge of a flower bed, this heuchera will add a touch of poetry to the garden. Pair it with hostas, Carex, and ferns for a wild effect. In a rockery, place a light-coloured mulch at its base to contrast with its beautiful foliage. Lastly, it makes an ideal ground cover, with remarkable colours that enhance hydrangeas or pieris. Pair this heuchera with cultivars such as 'Pinot Noir', 'Caramel', or even with blue or pink flowers such as forget-me-nots, corydalis, or lungworts. Heuchera is perfect for filling pots, containers, and large shaded planters. A good cut flower, the delicate bell-shaped flowers of this plant add a lot of lightness to bouquets.

Botanical data
Choose a morning sun exposure, or partially shaded exposure during the hottest hours of the day: heucheras do not appreciate scorching situations that 'burn' their foliage. Prepare a planting hole of 20 cm x 20 cm x 20 cm (8 in x 8 in x 8 in). If your soil is heavy, mix some compost with the crumbled soil, partially fill the hole and place your bucket (after removing the pot) so that the top of the plant's root ball is covered with 3 cm (1 in) of soil. The addition of a base fertiliser (dried blood or crushed horn) will nourish your plant during its rooting period without the risk of burning. Firm the soil and water generously to eliminate air pockets. If the weather is dry, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to encourage the plant's establishment. Heucheras renew their foliage in late winter, so we recommend pruning the leaves from the previous year in January or February.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
