Description

The Heuchera 'Little Cutie Blondie' is a recent hybrid heuchera, with a particularly compact habit and fruity colors, which will create a sensation in garden borders but also in flower pots on the terrace or balcony. It develops evergreen foliage that is strongly tinged with caramel pink, from which rises a highly colorful flowering, consisting of red stems adorned with countless small cream-yellow flowers, creating a chromatic contrast full of dynamism. It will bloom throughout the growing season, planted in a cool but well-drained soil, in a non-scorching or partially shaded location.

Developed by the American company Terra Nova Nurseries, Heuchera 'Blondie' is part of the 'Little Cutie' hybrid heuchera series, characterized by a very compact habit particularly suited for containers and rock gardens, a long flowering period, and bold and vibrant colors. These plants can also be grown indoors, much to the delight of gardeners without a garden.

The 'Blondie' Heuchera belongs to the Saxifragaceae family and forms a small spreading clump, 12 to 15 cm (5 to 6in) tall and 20 to 25 cm (8 to 10in) wide for the foliage. The flowering stems, 20 to 25 cm (8 to 10in) tall, emerge from June to September, up to 20 on a single plant. The combination of the summer color of the foliage, a bronze-caramel-pink, the red flowering stems, and the creamy yellow flowers creates a superb contrast. The leaves of this Heuchera are small, rounded, and strongly veined. The flowering, particularly long, light, and airy, consists of small bells arranged along an upright stem. This plant has a shallow root system, tolerates summer drought quite well, but will be more beautiful and more floriferous in cool soil.

The 'Blondie' Heuchera can be planted in the ground in a border, in a shaded and cool rock garden, or in a pot. In a row in front of a bed or along a path, this Heuchera will bring dynamism to the garden. Pair it with hostas, grasses, and ferns for a wild effect. It will also be a good companion for bushes and roses, planted in the undergrowth. In a rock garden, place a dark-colored mulch at its feet, contrasting with its beautiful foliage. Finally, it makes an ideal ground cover, with remarkable colors. Pair this Heuchera with blue flowers, the only shade it really lacks, and it will complement it perfectly. This little heuchera is an ideal plant for filling your flower pots, containers, and garden boxes. A good cut flower, the delicate bells of this plant bring a  lightness to bouquets.

Heucheras with slender stems and tiny bells were very fashionable in the 19th century in all European gardens. They were named 'Desespoir du peintre' (Painter's Despair) by the Impressionist painters, who probably tried to represent them in vain.

Planting and care

The Heuchera 'Blondie' can be planted in spring or autumn, either in the ground or in a container. It prefers shaded or semi-shaded positions and moist but well-drained soil, and tolerates temporary drought fairly well. Therefore, make sure to water it if the following summer after planting is particularly dry, or mulch around the base. On the other hand, it does not tolerate scorching sun. It can withstand sun or heat if its roots are kept in moist soil. Maintenance is limited to cleaning the foliage a little at the end of winter if it has dried out.
