Description

The Heuchera 'Lime Marmalade' is a new hybrid heuchera with crinkled apple green to lemon yellow foliage,  more vigorous than other golden-leaved varieties and  more tolerant of the sun. It forms a thick and incredibly bright evergreen cushion under delicate summer flowering,  in the form of slender spikes adorned with white bells. Undemanding and robust, this perennial is  to be placed along paths or in beds, or even in flower pots on the terrace or balcony.

The 'Lime Marmalade' Heuchera belongs to the saxifrage family. It is derived from the famous 'Marmalade', itself a hybrid of the Heuchera micrantha, native to rocky slopes and cliffs in the western United States. It will reach  35 to 40 cm (14 to 16in) in height and 40 to 45 cm (16 to 18in) in width, forming a large spreading clump. The foliage is the major asset of this plant: highly undulate, slightly crisped, its leaves display a blend of tender green, apple green, chartreuse and acidic lemon yellow that evolves with the seasons and temperatures. In summer, the dominant color is acidic green. The light and airy flowering starts in June and continues until August. These long spikes dancing in the wind give a blurry appearance to this romantic flowering, it is this movement difficult to capture on a canvas that earned heucheras the nickname of "painter's despair" that they share with some saxifrages. This plant has a shallow root system.

Planted in the ground, in a shaded and cool rockery or as a border to highlight a path, this heuchera will bring dynamism and color to the garden. Associate it with hostas, small grasses (Stipa, Carex) and ferns for a wild effect. It will also make a good companion for bushes (small Japanese maples) and roses. Pair it with varieties of pink or caramel color, with the blue of perennial geranium flowers, the only shade it truly lacks, it will be a perfect complement. Consider heucheras to fill your pots, containers, and flower beds in the company of geraniums, for example. A good cut flower, the graceful bells of this plant bring lightness to bouquets.

Planting and care

Easy to maintain, the 'Lime Marmalade' heuchera thrives in all well-drained, moist soils, in partial shade. It can tolerate sunny locations outside of the hottest hours, but it cannot be cultivated in the Mediterranean. Its close relation to H. villosa gives it good resistance to both heat and cold. You should plant it in loose, humus-rich soil, and consider using mulch. It prefers well-draining soil with rocks both in and on top of the ground. Sandy and poor soils should be avoided. Also, avoid planting it near overly vigorous perennials. Heucheras have relatively shallow root systems, so you should plant them slightly deeper than the crown (where the foliage begins). After a few years of growth or when dividing them, you should replant them slightly deeper, making sure to remove any lignified parts.
