Value-for-money
Extremely floriferous, erecting magnificent spikes of pink flowers on reddish stems, above a caramel-tinged foliage, this evergreen heuchera takes on sumptuous brick-like hues in late summer and autumn. This floriferous variety offers a fabulous combination of colours. Plant it in a moist, semi-shaded soil, either in the ground or in pots.

Description

Heuchera 'Pink Pearls' offers not only beautifully coloured, elusive and changing foliage, but also exceptionally abundant pink flowers. Its numerous red spikes loaded with delicate pink flowers dominate foliage that passes through different shades of caramel-pink, orange, green, brick and brown, creating lovely multicoloured carpets at the front of flower beds and in containers. Like many heucheras, this small variety appreciates fresh, light, rather rich soil and thrives in partial shade.

Heucheras belong to the Saxifragaceae family. Long present in our European gardens and often inseparable from the gardens of our grandparents, this perennial plant was rediscovered at the end of the 20th century thanks to hybridisation work that revealed an endless variety of foliage colours. The basic colours are already numerous: from green to black, passing through pink, red, and brown; each cultivar is unique. The lamina, often veined with a darker hue, highlights the depth and subtlety of all the nuances present on the foliage. Finally, the overall appearance changes with temperature, covering a very rich range of colours, sometimes different from one leaf to another. It is impossible not to find the palette that suits you, even if you have a very specific idea in mind!

'Pink Pearls' is a French creation by Thierry Delabroye. Its range of colours is both soft and warm: it covers the range of pinks, oranges, bricks, and caramel-browns in a multitude of shades, which become more intense towards the end of the season. Its size is fairly compact: 30 cm (12 in) tall with a spread of 40 cm (16 in). It forms a clump of long-stalked leaves. These leaves are deeply lobed, beautifully veined, and measure 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 in) in diameter. From June to July, numerous red stems rise distinctly above the foliage and bear clusters loaded with buds of a deep pink that open into small bell-shaped flowers of a lovely pale pink. Flowering can last until the end of summer, depending on the climate. It is a hardy perennial that requires no maintenance and prefers fresh, well-drained soil.

Heuchera 'Pink Pearls' will fit in anywhere: in small gardens, grouped together, at the edge of large flower beds, at the base of shrubs, and so on. It brings an end to the monotony of winter, especially when it spreads its beautiful foliage near the house. 'Pink Pearls' can be placed in a tonal composition with 'Peach Crisp', 'Fire Chief', 'Pinot Gris', and 'Peach flambé', for example. They will thus form a dense and luminous ground cover in the undergrowth, at the base of a wall, or in a container near an entrance. To welcome autumn, place it next to late perennials, such as Chrysanthemum 'Mary Stoker' or Helenium Sahin's Early Flowered. If you are a fan of grasses, dahlias, and sedums, do not hesitate to mix them with your heucheras.

Planting and care

Prepare a planting hole of 20 cm x 20 cm x 20 cm (8 in x 8 in x 8 in). If your soil is heavy, mix some compost with the crumbled soil, partially fill the hole and place your young plant in such a way that the top of the root ball is covered with 3 cm (1 in) of soil. The addition of a slow-release fertiliser (dried blood or crushed horn) will nourish your plant during its rooting period without the risk of burning. Firm the soil and water generously to eliminate any air pockets. If the weather is dry, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to encourage the establishment of your plant. Heucheras renew their foliage at the end of winter, so we recommend cutting back the previous year's leaves in January and February.

Maintenance is limited to lightly cleaning the foliage at the end of winter if it has dried. If the stump becomes significantly larger, you can divide it after 3-4 years.
