Description

Heuchera 'Vivid Crimson' (Heuchera sanguinea), commonly known as "Coral bells", is a perennial prized for its scarlet bell-shaped flowers that bloom abundantly in spring and summer. Originating from North America, this hardy variety is perfect as ground cover or in moist rockeries, as well as in pots. Provide it with light, humus-bearing, moist soil, and partial shade.

Heuchera sanguinea 'Vivid Crimson' belongs to the Saxifragaceae family, hailing from the mountainous regions of the United States and Mexico. With a compact habit, it forms a dense mound reaching 30 to 45 cm tall and wide. Its foliage is slightly lobed, fairly light green veined with dark green, sometimes covered with fine silvery hairs in autumn. It generally persists in winter, depending on the climate. The flowers of this variety stand out: tall flower stems rising to 60 cm from the ground bear bright red bell-shaped flowers, larger and more visible than those of other Heucheras. They emit a light fragrance that attracts bees and butterflies. This generous flowering, spreading from May-June to July-August, is superb in bouquets.

Heuchera 'Vivid Crimson' can be used in borders, in slightly damp rockeries, or in pots on the terrace. It pairs well with perennials such as Hardy Geraniums, Rockery Columbines, Bleeding Hearts (Dicentra), or even Corydalis. To create an interesting visual contrast, combine this Heuchera with plants like Alpine Lady's Mantle, which appreciates the same soil and light conditions.

Heucheras with trembling stems and tiny bells were very fashionable in the 19th century in all European gardens. It was the Impressionist painters who named them 'Painter's Despair', having probably tried to represent them in vain.

Planting and care

Sowing :

The seeds of Heuchera 'Vivid Crimson' can be sown under cover in spring or directly in place in autumn. Use a light substrate, a compound of compost and sand, and sow the seeds on the surface, as they need light to germinate. Maintain a temperature of 18 to 22°C and keep the soil slightly moist until germination, which occurs in 2 to 3 weeks. Replant the young plants after the last frosts, spacing them 30 cm apart.

Cultivation :

Heuchera 'Vivid Crimson' thrives in light and well-drained soil, preferably enriched with organic matter. It tolerates limestone soils and can be planted in full sun or partial shade. It is very hardy and withstands temperatures down to -25°C. Once established, it withstands drought well. Mulch can be added to maintain soil moisture in summer. Divide the clumps every 3 to 4 years to rejuvenate the plant and promote better flowering.
