Description

The Heuchera 'Tiramisu', as its name suggests, is an absolutely delightful perennial plant. This hybrid of Heuchera villosa is famous for its semi-evergreen foliage that changes colour over time, ranging from green-yellow gold, orange, brick, to light chocolate brown, under a delicate summer flowering, in thin spikes adorned with white bells. Not demanding and robust, this perennial is best placed along pathways or in flowerbeds, or even in flower pots on the terrace or balcony.

'Tiramisu' Heuchera belongs to the saxifrage family. It originates from rocky, shady, and humid areas of the Appalachian Mountains in the Northeast United States. The 'Tiramisu' cultivar will reach 30 to 35 cm (12 to 14in) in height and 40 to 45 cm (16 to 18in) in width, forming a large spreading clump. The semi-evergreen to evergreen foliage is the major asset of this plant: the rounded leaves of the Heuchera, strongly veined, offer a constantly changing spectacle. Initially acid green, turning to golden yellow in spring, its leaves gradually become tinged with orange, then purple, and finally chocolate brown, evolving with the seasons and temperatures. In summer, the coloration in the center of the leaf will intensify, almost covering the entire leaf and predominantly turning brick red. In winter, the leaves are narrowly margined with yellow-gold. The light and airy flowering begins in June and continues until August. These long spikes, playing with the wind, give a blurred aspect to this romantic flowering, which is difficult to capture on canvas, earning heucheras the nickname of "painter's despair" that they share with certain saxifrages. This plant has a shallow root system and requires moist soil in all seasons. Note that 'Tiramisu' Heuchera is a sterile variety.

'Tiramisu' will be enhanced within a tone-on-tone composition with 'Peach Crisp', 'Fire Chief', 'Pinot Gris', and 'Peach Flambé'. Together, they will form a dense and luminous ground cover in woodland areas, at the base of a wall, or in containers near entrances. To welcome autumn with fervor, place it next to late-blooming perennials such as Chrysanthemum 'Mary Stoker' or Helenium 'Sahin's Early Flowered', along with grasses and Sedums.

Present in our European gardens for a long time and often inseparable from grandmothers' gardens, Heuchera was rediscovered at the end of the 20th century thanks to hybridization work that revealed an infinite variety of foliage colors. The basic colours are already numerous: from green to black, including pink, red, and brown, each cultivar is unique. Moreover, the lamina is often veined with a deeper tone that accentuates the contrast of colours. Finally, the overall appearance evolves with temperatures, covering a very rich range of colours, sometimes different from one leaf to another. It is impossible not to find the "perfect" palette, even if you have something very specific in mind!

Planting and care

The Heuchera 'Tiramisu' is planted in spring or autumn. Easy to maintain, the heuchera thrives in all well-drained, moist soils, in partial shade. However, it can tolerate sunny locations outside of the hottest hours. Its strong resemblance to H. villosa gives it good heat and cold resistance. You should plant it in loose, humus-rich soil, possibly with mulch. Leave a depth of 20 cm (8in). Space the heucheras 30 cm (12in) apart. This perennial likes well-draining soil and rocks in and above the ground. Sandy and poor soils should be avoided. Also, avoid planting it too close to vigorous perennials. Heucheras have rather shallow roots, so you should plant them slightly deeper than the crown (the point of origin of the foliage). After a few years of growth or when dividing them, you should replant them slightly deeper, taking care to remove lignified parts. During winter, the heuchera renews its foliage, so it is best to cut back the leaves from the previous year between January and February. Be aware of leaf eelworms, vine weevils, and galls that can cause viruses and pose problems.
