Description

The Heucherella 'Honey Rose' is a hardy evergreen perennial with changing colours: rose veined with purple, it turns honey-coloured in summer. From June to August, pretty little white bell-shaped flowers emerge from its magnificent foliage. It is a remarkable recent creation that thrives in shade and partial shade.

The Heucherella is one of those plants that prove that horticulturists, by playing matchmaker, can create arranged marriages that are nonetheless very successful. Indeed, the Heucherella Brass Lantern is the result of hybridization between two well-known Saxifragaceae: the Heuchera and the Foamflower. 'Honey Rose' is a very interesting cultivar with evergreen foliage composed of small incised and lobed leaves, and its colour changes noticeably throughout the seasons: generally rose veined with purple, it turns honey-coloured in summer. At the same time, from June to August, it is adorned with charming little white bell-shaped flowers. It is a plant with a spread habit that reaches a height of 35 cm (14in) and a width of 40 cm (16in) when fully grown.

From its parents, the Heucherella has inherited a clear preference for partial shade and the freshness of humus-rich soil, as well as an excellent hardiness of down to at least -15°, and strong vigour. Its maintenance is limited and consists of removing faded flowers and withered leaves as they appear. This makes this little marvel a rather easy-to-grow plant as long as you respect its essential needs. In the garden, it will easily find its place in partially shaded beds, in colourful woodland settings, or at the base of trees in a family association with Heuchera and Foamflower, as well as with ferns like Athyrium niponicum Red Beauty or Dryopteris erythrosa.

Planting and care

Easy to maintain, the Heucherella thrives in all types of moist to wet, well-drained, neutral to acidic soils. It can be planted in partial shade or dense shade (although the foliage colour may become duller). It must be kept away from full sun. You can plant it in loose soil that retains moisture, with the option to provide mulch. It does not tolerate very hot conditions and prefers high humidity. Once established, this perennial seems to tolerate dry shade under trees and bushes. It requires little maintenance, and pruning is not necessary unless the foliage is damaged or for rejuvenation purposes.
