I replanted my hostas in a garden that I can only maintain occasionally. I was unpleasantly surprised to find them completely gone from one visit to the next. Although I didn't witness it, I assume slugs devoured them. In conclusion, one needs to be present on site to protect this type of plant. My ignorance cost me my money but painfully educated me...

Description

The Hosta 'Big Mama' is a giant blue variety! It forms a clump wider than H. 'Big Daddy', densely filled with large thick and deeply puckered leaves in the shape of rounded hearts, of an intense pruinose green-blue even in shade! It has medium growth and good vigour, making it an effective ground cover in the least sunny corners of gardens. From July to August, its white bell-shaped flowers hang on spikes above its foliage. Plant it in cool, rich and well-drained soil.

This Hosta, or Funkia, is a completely hardy perennial with a bushy habit from spring onwards. It belongs to the asparagaceae family. The plant forms a spreading cushion 1 m (3ft) in height and 1 m (3ft) in width. It is a long-lived plant with numerous deciduous leaves that are about 30 cm (12in) tall and 25 cm (10in) wide, tapering to a pointed tip. The lamina is very thick and plicate with deep veins. The "wax" on its leaves disappears with the heat of summer. From the heart of its glaucous foliage, floral spikes emerge in summer, bearing racemes of bell-shaped, slightly fragrant flowers.

Hostas are perfect for partially shaded borders or beds, where other plants struggle to grow. They prefer sheltered locations that remain cool. Combine them with ferns, delphiniums, seal of solomon and other low-growing ground cover perennials like creeping bugles. All of them are very effective as slug repellents. The Brunnera macrophylla 'Mr Morse', which are silver-leaved plants familiar in the undergrowth, will be excellent companions. Also consider Heucheras and their fantastic range of colours, or the delicate fairy flowers (Epimediums). This way, you will enhance the shaded and slightly damp parts of the garden by creating a pleasant haven of freshness for the summer. Hostas also thrive in containers, which should be placed in semi-shade and watered regularly. Hostas pair wonderfully with spring bulbs that appear in late spring, just in time to hide the fading plants with their generous foliage!

Did you know: Most species found in Western gardens have been introduced from Japan. Hostas are edible and are called urui in Japan, where they are commonly consumed.

Planting and care

Hostas are planted in spring or autumn. Hostas prefer a deep, rich, humus-bearing, loose soil, preferably neutral to acidic (at least low in limestone), moist to wet throughout the year. Plant them in partial shade or dappled shade, and in a sheltered location away from strong winds.

Prepare a planting hole of 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in). If your soil is heavy, mix half compost with crumbled soil, partially fill the hole, and place your plant with the root ball so that the top of the root ball is covered with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Adding a slow-release fertiliser (dehydrated blood, horn powder) will nourish your plant during its rooting period without risk of burning. Make sure to position the collar well above ground level. Firmly pack the soil and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets. If the weather is dry, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate your plant's establishment. Also, water regularly during dry summers.

With their common preference for moist areas, slugs and snails never stray far from hostas. Even though blue or variegated hostas often have thicker and tougher foliage, which is less appetizing to slugs, these plants still need protection from gastropods. Protect your hostas by surrounding them with ferramol-based pellets (approved for organic agriculture), eggshells, coffee grounds, wood chips, or any dry and rough natural substance that repels them. Hedgehogs are the gardener's best allies in the fight against gastropods, as they do not till the soil like chickens and do not attack the tender green shoots of young plants. Finally, some plants have a repulsive smell to slugs, such as wormwood and garlic.
