Description

Hosta 'Frosted Mouse Ears' is an adorable miniature variety with the thick variegated foliage from the famous "Mouse Ears" series. It is a mutation of the well-known variety 'Royal Mouse Ears'. Each leaf is almost round, with a blue-green to green colour, surrounded by a wide cream-yellow margin that becomes almost white in summer. The plant forms a small, neat-looking mound, covered in summer with lavender flower spikes. This variety is not very appetising to slugs and snails and is beautiful in borders or makes a pleasant ground cover when planted en masse in moist shade. It also grows very well in pots.

Hosta 'Frosted Mouse Ears' is a deciduous perennial plant in the family Asparagaceae according to the current classification. It shows a growth habit, almost spreading, in small circular clumps of symmetrical vegetation, from spring. The plant reaches a height of 15 to 20 cm for the foliage and spreads up to 40 to 45 cm. Its longevity is excellent. It has heart-shaped, smooth and very thick, blue-green leaves with a wide yellow then white margin. They have a curious appearance that resembles mouse ears, as their margin is rolled and their tip is pointed. The plant retains its bluish colouration well in slightly sunny situations. Pale green flower stalks rise through the foliage with bell-shaped flowers in August that are quite large compared to the plant. They are pale lavender and borne in fairly compact clusters.

Hosta 'Frosted Mouse Ears' pairs well in partial shade with all its companions from the same series to create a neat border, especially 'Blue Mouse Ears'. Also consider helxine, which forms lovely low carpets, acid-green lady's mantle, ferns, and eucomis for an elegant and surprising effect with minimal maintenance. This dwarf hosta also thrives in a border, a moist, shaded rock garden, with columbines and bleeding hearts, or even with small violets. All hostas grow well in pots and can remain in the same container for several years. Use a special container potting soil. As long as the foliage is not too dense, you can water from the top of the pot. Then place a saucer under the pot and pour water into it, keeping the level constant in summer.

Planting and care

Hostas can be planted in spring or autumn. Hostas thrive in deep, rich, humus-bearing, loose soil, preferably neutral to acidic (at least low in limestone), and consistently moist to wet throughout the year. Plant 'Frosted Mouse Ears' in partial shade or dappled shade, and in a sheltered location protected from strong winds.

Prepare a planting hole that is 20 cm x 20 cm x 20 cm. If your soil is heavy, mix equal parts of compost with crumbled soil, partially backfill the hole, and place your potted plant so that the top of the root ball is covered with 3 cm of soil. The addition of a slow-release fertiliser (dehydrated blood, horn powder) will nourish your plant during its rooting period without the risk of burning. Make sure to position the collar well above ground level. Firm the soil and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets. If the weather is dry, regular watering for a few weeks will help facilitate the establishment of your plant. Also, water regularly during dry summers.

With their shared preference for moist locations, slugs and snails are never far from hostas. Even though blue or variegated hostas often have thicker and tougher foliage, which is less appealing to slugs, these plants still need protection. Safeguard your hostas by surrounding them with ferramol-based pellets (approved for organic farming), eggshells, coffee grounds, mulch, or any dry and rough natural substance that repels them. Hedgehogs are the gardener's best allies in slug and snail control, as they do not disturb the soil like chickens do and do not target the lush green shoots of young plants. Lastly, some plants have a smell repellent to slugs, such as absinthe and garlic.
