Description

Iris 'Urluberlu' is a very beautiful novelty in the category of "plicata" irises which develops flowering stems which are well-branched from the base and bear lots of medium-sized flowers. Its bluish-white petals stand upright above cream sepals, narrowly edged and sprinkled with navy blue. The whole is enhanced by orange beards. This truly luminous variety has a great effect on a slope or in a flower bed, at the end of the iris season.

Iris 'Urluberlu' is a rhizomatous and deciduous, upright perennial plant. It belongs to the Iridaceae family. It is one of the many cultivars obtained over centuries, whose controversial origin is debated around the number of chromosomes of potential ancestors. It should be noted that Garden Irises have European origins.

Iris Urluberlu is the result of a cross between 'Bord De Mer' and 'Belle Hortense'. The plant will reach 80 cm (32in) high when flowering, with 11 to 12 buds per stem. The tuft will spread without theoretical limit over time, with the centre rhizomes becoming bare in favour of the outer rhizomes. It has an elegant upright dense clump. The foliage consists of long sword-shaped, glaucous green and highly veined deciduous leaves. Floral stems appear in April and flower in May-June, opening from the top down. The colour is magnified by the thick texture of the petals and sepals.

To accompany irises, choose plants based on their needs (exposure, soil, etc.), growth (low-growing plants or light foliage), decorative appearance and flowering date. For example, Gaura will provide little shade to the irises and keep the iris bed attractive throughout the summer. California Poppies and Love-in-a-Mist will thrive in dry and poor soil like the irises. Perennial geraniums, salvias, and Libertias also go very well with irises. Bush roses are good companions for irises. Slopes and terraced edges can be stabilised by a dense planting of old varieties that require little care. If the goal is more decorative and access for care is possible, you can choose more modern varieties, such as intermediates that are less likely to be knocked over.

The vegetable garden can be embellished with a few clumps or borders of irises for cut flowers.

Planting and care

Do you have a sunny, warm location, dry in summer?
This is the ideal location for irises! In the shade, they grow but do not flower. They are hardy and do not need winter protection. Well-drained soil is perfect, even dry and chalky. Soil that is too wet promotes rotting of the rhizome. Plant from July to September to allow the rhizome enough time to grow and develop new roots before winter. They should be planted immediately after purchase for best results. Plan to divide the irises every 4 years or so to give them fresh soil. They are vigorous and need space to develop and flower well. Plant with a spacing appropriate to the size and vigour of the variety: about 34-50 cm (13-20in) for tall varieties. In a monochrome planting, the rhizomes are planted in a staggered pattern. To create a mix of colors plant them in groups of several plants of the same variety. Always consider the direction of growth of the rhizomes by arranging them in a star shape, with buds and leaves facing outward, and spacing them well away from other varieties so they have room to develop.

Planting

Dig a hole that is wide and deep enough. Create a conical mound of soil in the hole, on which the rhizomes and spread-out roots are placed. Cover the roots. The rhizome must be left just above the surface of the soil. It should not be planted in a dip (risk of rot), so anticipate that the soil will settle and the iris will sink. In clayey or damp soil, the rhizome can even be elevated on a slight mound. To make the soil cling to the roots, lightly firm and water thoroughly after planting. Water 2-3 times if necessary until it is established.

Maintenance:

Keep the soil weed-free by shallow hoeing, taking care not to damage the rhizome or roots. Weeds shade the irises, retain moisture (causing rot), and attract slugs. Likewise, remove dry leaves. If they are diseased (reddish-edged spots of heterosporiosis), burn them. Remove faded flowers.
