Description

The Autumn Anemone 'Septemberglanz' offers abundant semi-double pink flowers, with silky reflections. This elegant perennial plant is a fairly tall variety, with a long flowering period from August to autumn, producing magnificent flowers on sturdy stems, with fully open corollas surrounding a wide golden yellow centre of stamens. It possesses a romantic and wild charm that complements other autumn blooms. It thrives in full sun or partial shade, in moist and rich soil.

Anemone tomentosa 'Septemberglanz' is a plant belonging to the Ranunculaceae family. It can reach a height of 80 cm (32in) to 1 m depending on the soil fertility, with a diameter of approximately 60 cm (24in). Like other Japanese anemones, it is a perennial plant with fibrous 'tubers' that form large vigorous and rounded clumps. In the case of the Anemone tomentosa species, native to China, the foliage is deciduous to semi-evergreen depending on the climate, deeply dissected, dark green, and velvety on the underside. The flowering period spans from August to October, and it is particularly abundant. The flowers are solitary, borne on sturdy, upright, and highly branched stems.
In 'Septemberglanz', a variety obtained in Germany in the 1960s, the flowers first appear as lovely, oval and velvety buds, in a purple-pink colour.  They then open up into semi-double cups. The petals have particularly elegant iridescent reflections, reminiscent of crumpled silk. The golden yellow centre is densely covered in stamens.

The 'Septemberglanz' anemone is one of the most beautiful autumn flowers. Light and graceful, it sways gently in the wind, unaffected by the first frost. It decorates the garden or large pots on the terrace from late summer to the first frosts. Autumn anemones can live for years in the same spot. They can sometimes become a bit invasive if they are happy, but it is quite easy to restrict their growth. 'Septemberglanz' can be associated with other late blooms such as Tradescant's Aster or 'Guizhou' Milky Artemisia. They can also be paired with grasses with fine foliage for contrast, such as Sylvatic Sedge or 'Goldschleier' Tufted Hair Grass.

Planting and care

Japanese anemones grow in partial shade, in a moist soil enriched with humus, loose, and not too chalky where they slowly spread with the help of their underground rootstocks. Plant them outdoors, in a location sheltered from strong winds that would flatten the clumps, in spring or autumn, spacing them 30cm (12in) apart, in a moist to wet, but well-drained soil. Once the young plants are established, they should not be disturbed anymore. The flowering becomes more and more abundant as the years go by. In late autumn, cut the flower stems close to the ground. Every 2 or 3 years, apply well-rotted compost at their base to enrich the soil, as they are quite demanding.
